I just lost a friend to suicide today.
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 11:05 PM by Scooter24
And it really hurts to know that I'll never get that chance to know him better.

Such a charismatic and funny boy with lots of friends and a loving family.

I feel like I just got the wind knocked out of me  I also feel a bit angry at him for leaving his family and friends the way he did. And I feel ashamed at that.

RIP Bradlie
1985-2007

Thanks DU.

21. Geeze, what a great looking kid.
I had a few friends in high school blow themselves away. We thought it was normal where I come from. Stuffed all the horror of it deep inside and drank our way through it.

I'm really sorry, man.

Try to remember that Bradie himself wouldn't have considered leaving his family and friends unless he was in unbearable pain, and you will be able to forgive him in time. I'm so sorry for your loss.

11. It's sad when that happens...
Tragic doesn't even fit...it's beyond that. We had a family member who committed suicide several years back and it felt like someone yanked a rug out from under us. When I got the call, I had to ask the caller to repeat herself -- it was just inconceivable.

You do go through a combination of grief and guilt and frustration and anger...it's a normal reaction so don't feel ashamed of it. I went through the same thing. And all the 'what if's' and the 'if only's. In the end, they don't change anything and they make you feel even worse, so try not to fall into that trap. And it is a trap.

I'm sorry for your pain...and for his.

29. I lost a friend to suicide earlier this year.
I feel your pain, and I'm sorry.

I think back to the innocence of our childhood, and I can't imagine that this would ever happen.

When I felt angry at my friend for this, as you are, I had to keep in mind that I wasn't mad at him. I was mad at what he did and how it made me feel. I couldn't bring myself to be mad at someone that, for whatever reason, felt like there was no other way. To me, it felt like I was piling on, and how could I possibly relate to the feelings of someone that took his own life?

Again, I'm sorry. 1985...he was 22.

He was 14, popular, athletic, smart, funny, and from the outside he looked like he had everything going for him. He seemed like a pretty happy kid.

Obviously, he had some deep dark things he was wrestling with, that he was not sharing with others about.

I am so sorry for your loss, and totally understand your anger.

I know how you feel as I lost a 19 year old nephew to suicide on Valentines Day. He died of an apparent broken heart. A 4.0 student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, a member of Denver Taiko, a world traveler, a great big loving family and everything to live for.

Not in a million years would I have ever imagined such a gifted young man taking his own life.

It's heartbreaking to hear stories of young people commiting suicide. They have so much of their lives left ahead. If only he knew that whatever he was going through would shift. It always does...

May Bradlie's soul find Peace.

He killed himself on Pearl Harbor Day in 1981. It was also the day before the first anniversary of John Lennon's death. I always associate the Lennon memorials every year and the Pear Harbor memorials with my friend's death. It's also one of the main events that led me to my career working with kids.

I can perfectly understand why you would be angry and hurt by his decision to kill himself. I would be more worried about you if you did not feel that at some point. I hope you find what you need here and with your loved ones during this time.

If I may offer you a suggestion, at this point, a lot of people, maybe you, will be trying to figure out why he did this. The reality is that only one person will know for sure, and he is gone now. Just stay with each other, support each other, and feel angry, hurt, whatever now. Save the whys for later. Trying to figure out why right now will only get in your way.

77. Don't Be Ashamed Of Your Mixed Emotions On This

The half grieved/half angry state of mind is a completely normal and understandable reaction to a suicide. I know from personal experience.

Sorry for your loss.

78. Tomorrow is the 15-year anniversary of the death of one of the
best friends I've ever had. His suicide knocked me back so hard that I'm still recovering from it today. Suicide is a horrible thing for everyone involved.

Hugs to you, Scooter--I'm so very, very sorry.
