2. Yes, it's for real
I found my cousin in Florida was on the list, called her and she did get the
money. Had to have the right identification, etc., but it's legit. Good for
you and the people you found on the list!! You certainly deserve a finders fee or
at least four good dinners to look forward to.

6. Very weird!
I just went there and put my name in. Says the county I live in owes me over $100...Justice of the Peace??!!?? The address was an address I lived at 20 years ago. I have no idea why the Justice of the Peace would owe me over $100. I guess I'll check it out......

7. I found an old title insurance policy on mine.
That says I'm owed money.

It sent me to the state of Florida to file a claim with a property number. It never asked for a fee.

Is this real?

27. Good for You!
This has been a little evocative for me also.

One name I found was of my favorite ex-sister-in-law from Okinawa that divorced her cheating spouse (my brother). It was odd to see her lovely name and remember much about her and then to know she had money coming...well, I think she'll appreciate my efforts.

I hope claiming the forgotten assets works out for you all.

It did not cost me a penny but for proof of who I was. Just a copy of license and a home bill with address. I do not know why this company listed had money from me and it was over 100 dollars.

29. I had some major disappointment, but then a bit of good news!
125 guys on there who share my name, and not ONE of them was me!

But then I started typing in names of people I know,
and I found my sweetie's dad listed at his old office address!
It's less than $100, but it's still gotta be more than ZERO, right?

Thanks for posting this, StClone!

34. My Son Found and Collect $250 There
He actually sort of knew the state owed him some money, or at least he sort of thought so. Someone told him about that site, he took a look and found himself. A letter or two later he had his complete refund from income tax from several years earlier (when he was in his late teens). I do not recall the exact amount, but it was a little over two hundred fifty bucks.

I thought it couldn't possibly be right. When I saw Justice of the Peace I thought marriage or divorce and I married and divorced in Oklahoma before I moved to Texas so I knew that couldn't be right. I'm still in shock but just filed a claim and got a claim number. I'll be mailing it with proof tomorrow!

48. States often do that for unclaimed stock.
Let's say your have 10 shares of XYZ stock that you forgot about. The state will not assign a value to them, because it changes all the time. So they list "unknown". In Texas, they list 0.00 to mean that.

Don't get me wrong. Missing money is great, but not all states praticipate. At this site, you can find a link to the Unclaimed Property Office of each state. Good luck.

46. DON'T TRY TO GET FINDER'S FEES. IT MAY BE ILLEGAL.
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 03:31 PM by OldSiouxWarrior
Finder's Fees, often called "heir finders" are tightly regulated by some states, and illegal in some. In some states you may need a special license to try to get a finders fee from people on the unclaimed property list. Check your local state laws before trying to make any money from the list.

52. Just looked a little further and found monies owed (two)
to one of my cousins - we have an uncommon last name so that made the search easier. Sent him an e-mail and closed by telling him I wanted 10%. He will know that part is a joke.

Not only is DU great for coffee, politics, pets and money - it is good for family relations. I have not actually seen him or communicated with him for at least 15 years - the sad reality of families being scattered all over the country/world.
