It's a grandchild!

My daughter gave birth to my first grandchild over the weekend. My daughter, and my daughter's partner of ten years, are going to be wonderful moms.

I know it is traditional to ask if it is a girl or a boy, but I'm so hostile towards patriarchy that I won't answer, so don't bother.

What is important is that this is a much wanted child who will have two intelligent, capable (not to mention well-to-do) parents.

The world just gained another liberal!

And since you mentioned it...time for my rant...the one I give to people who go on about my being a TS.

WHY is it that, whenever anyone has a child...the announcement in the office, or wherever else is always
IT'S A BOY OR IT'S A GIRL
and the the baby's name and birth weight and height in small letters as if the child's sex is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING???

Why not ask if the baby is healthy?? If the mom is healthy...is the mom okay?? WHY is it always the first question, the baby's sex...as if that was the most important thing??

16. You're a mermaid after my own heart!

It is nobody's business what's in the kids diaper, and if anyone asks, they deserve a loaded diaper thrown at them, IMO.

The baby is healthy, the mom is healthy, and I'm so happy I could burst.

To my way of thinking the most important thing about an infant is if they're liberal or conservative. Naturally this is difficult to ascertain at birth, but given this kid's parents, I'm chalking up one for our side.

The baby actually had an evident sex at birth, so that they didn't subject the infant to genital mutilation as a way of enforcing stereotypical gender roles. Whew! What luck! The most brutal aspect of patriarchy is what it does to intersex kids. And we call ourselves civilized?

42. Glad Ya Like It
i can't remember for sure who I first heard utter those words, but I know it was somewhere in the transgender community. I think it was probably Lola Cola who first said that, but I may be mistaken.

Incidentally, if you watch the HBO movie "southern Comfort" Lola Cola is in that movie quite extensively.

As to the other quote you liked, about stuffing them back in and asking for a refund...that one came direct from "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."

My theory about becoming a grandparent is that the less you push for it, the more likely it is. If you have really rebellious kids, tell them that the last thing in the world you want is granchildren, and you'll have some before you know it!

But the happy parents just got a new apartment in one of the pricier sections of New York, so my guess is that this is one kid that was born spoiled. On the other hand, both parents are hardworking and intelligent, so the silver spoon it was born with is probably engraved with the Golden Rule.

I think people just want to know what name the child will have so they can agree that it is a wonderful name or later criticize the choice.

People are weird. As long as the child is surrounded by love and understanding, no one should really care what sex it is. It is just hard to talk about anyone without a name...many names are unisex today any way so parents can get around labeling the child. Madison, Morgan, Taylor, etc.

Whatever the name, I am sure it has been a much anticipated birth and will continue to be a blessed arrival.

I will never have a grandchild, so I send out my love to yours.

I will admit that I'm one of those people that wants to know the name. Not for any reason other than for some reason names fascinate me, I'm always looking for one that makes me go "oooh, love that!" I completely agree that what's in the kid's diaper doesn't mean a thing.

Actually, with the exception of the unisex names someone mentioned earlier, most names are gender role indicators.

Maybe until we take this country back, we can take a tip from Major Major in Catch-22, and start giving all our kids the first name "President."

Just a thought......

68. Thank you, fleabert. I've always agreed with you.

Babies are born, packages are delivered. And babies were born long before the medical profession was conceived, so they had to have been born without being delivered. Doula is probably the world's truly oldest profession. If people hadn't helped other people, none of us would be here today. What with the number of uninsured people in this country, and the outrageous "shipping & handling" fees for infant "deliveries," I think more and more parents are considering home births, so the earlier they consult a doula, the better they'll understand their options.

Thank you for both your kind thoughts and your good work!

80. Thanks, yellowdogintexas!

I just used the link posted above littlelefties.com to send off two baby shirts. One says, "Future Feminist," and the other says, "I love my mommies."

I know the kid lives in New York City, but the store didn't have them in black, so I had to settle for white. On the other hand, it will only be a short time before I can send one of those black toddler-sized shirts that says, "Question Authority" and has "Authority" written with the anarchist "A." Maybe I should suggest that they start carrying them in infant sizes!

83. Thank you, SCRUBDASHRUB!

You must be the 3rd or 4th person to say "Mazel Tov!"

How the heck did everyone know the baby is Jewish? I just checked my original post, and I hadn't said a word!

77. Belated Congratulations!
I didn't see this thread until late but please accept my congratulations.....

I'm told being a grandparent is god's gift to parents for NOT killing the child during the "terrible two's".

85. Thanks, ewagner!

That sounds right to me. I pity the parents of today. It was tough enough when kids learned how to say, "no," but it must be doubly tough these days when they start saying "no way!"

86. Not yet.

My daughter knows that my printer doesn't do photos, so I'll probably be getting them by snailmail.

Thanks, shesemsmom!

82. Congratulations! Now is when the good stuff starts.
All the fun of being a parent without the sleepless nights, endless, sometimes robotic, days. And, you are, almost always, the Good Guy.

89. I promise to post a picture as soon as I get one.

I'd really expected to have one by now, but in thinking about it, I suspect that they don't want to disturb the baby, and they're probably planning to have a professional photographer in before they send anything out.

Thanks, tinfoilinfor2005!

93. Thanks, peekaloo.

At a time when lots of kids are born to families where both parents work, I think my grandchild is luckier than most.

Raising little liberals in a country where you get no help from the media is crucial to the future of democracy.

Thank you.
