I'm a feminist, but
I wish we respected the rights of pharmacists more. I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think it's fair to force people to serve their country in a way that's against their morals. They should be allowed to register as Conscientious Objectors, and the Pharmacy Draft Boards should be considerate of that if their number gets called. There should be some kind of other community service the Board assigns to them if they have documented reasons why they can't perform the job.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I also think pharmacists who don't feel they can do the job should be allowed to quit, without retribution. It's not right to force someone into a job against their will, and then if they refuse to perform the mission, we court martial them and toss them in jail.

I am thinking of trying to start up something like an underground railroad, to help the pharmacists who oppose medicine escape to another country, or even just hide in our attics - whatever it takes to help these victims. We'd need a way they could easily identify the safe houses to flee to - maybe we could put signs in our windows, something like a railroad sign - with the two RR's, but each R could have the little x at the bottom.

I hope that someday in the near future this health care crisis will end, and we will be able to have an all volunteer force. Until then, I call on each of you to show some compassion for these poor people, even if you don't agree with their beliefs.

2. The underground pharmacist network
They could have websites that look like a how-to-manual for the rhythm method. It'll really be instructions on how to smuggle a pharmacist through a sewer.

8. The sewers! Of course!
I should have thought of those immediately.

We'll have to protect them from the excrement down there, though, for sanitary reasons. They could have giant rubber things that fit snugly over them, so they can just slither along without getting soaked. I can't conceive of any problems with that.

We don't want to offend them.

This would be more like a long tube of latex that they place on their heads and roll down to completely cover their bodies to protect them from the damp dark sewer tunnel.

Nothing like a condom, ewwwww!

Then they could insert their morals into their jobs...It is very clear, in pharmacy schools, that pharmacists are going to be expected to dispense birth control, etc...it comes with the territory, and since most pharmacists are making in the high 5 to low 6 figures, they can suck it right up...

it offended your religion. If you can't fulfill the full requirements of your job, get another one. There is NO ARGUMENT that will justify someone preaching their religion on the job. NONE. If this were any other job and people imposed their religions, people would go off. No way should they get an ounce of sympathy or any wiggle room. They dispenses stuff JUST FINE before this and they can now. Or get out.

Or not.

13. Heres a different way to look at it
Your an employer at Burger King what would you do if a vegetarian employee wants a job but only wants to do parts of the job because it violates he's vegetarian belief systems? I am not picking on vegeterians just using that belief system as an example. It's not fair to the employer or the customers. The pharmicist like the waiter is in the service industry and the pharmicist is their for them not the other why around.

Point number two I was an anatomy and physiology class in jr college. The lab requirement was for me to put down a cat. I couldn't do it. I sucked it up and was a man about it and took a d for the course. It was my beliefs I didn't expect the class nor the professor to change the curriculum for me. And I still made it out school with a gpa higher than the Dubya.

The point I am making is that the first amendment gives everyone the right to practice any religion they want. However the problem is no one has the right to force others to practice that religion. The pharmicist is not thier to practice his religion that is what church is for and if it is to morally complicated for him or her to pass out birth control pills than he or she should just find another job.
Just remember the world revolves around the sun and not you nor me.

17. Since there is a significant amount of schooling involved
in becoming a pharmacist...I am of the opinion that one should make their mind up about whether it is against morals to dispense certain legal medications long before they finish their schooling (it is a 6 year degree in this country). And if they find they cannot morally dispense such medications, there are other areas in which they can work (for HMOs as pharmacy benefit administrators, for drug companies as research scientists and sales reps, for pharmacy schools as faculty...)

such as stringing beads, or licking envelopes, or counting the number of flyers in a mass mailing. (don't forget that they are very good at counting)

you know, a pharmacist is a terrible thing to waste.

maybe if we all chip in we could open a pharmacist rehab facility, and let them know that if they decide not to dispense medication it is perfectly acceptable--there are plenty of other jobs they can do while wearing white coats such as:

1. modeling white coats

2. become laboratory assistants

3. work in a mental health facility

4. model white coats

No birth control, no condoms, no tampons (Satan's fingers dontcha know), nothing unholy like that. Toby Keith cds always available in the $1.99 bin. Of course, no Medicare or Medicaid would be accepted because that's godless commie socialism and besides, if you were really right with the Lord you wouldn't be sick or poor.

32. I know a pharmacist who won't refuse to fill the scripts.
She's the daughter of life long friends. It's a damn shame that 5 years ago, when she started college, she actually thought she would be doing some good in the world. She has admitted that she nevet believed it would come down to something like this (people arguing over whether it's "moral" or not to fill a birth control script. Even though she is under contract, she vows to break it if refusing is forced upon her.

I'm very happy that I watched this bright young woman grow up.

58.  "It's not right to force someone into a job against their will"?
What are in the world are you talking about? Anyone who studies for 6 yrs to become a pharmacist know exactly what is expected of them. If they dont want the responsibility, then its time to change careers.

I think your post is one of the strangest yet.

If they can't handle the job, they SHOULD be allowed to change careers. Hence the need for the railroad.

So can I put you down for a donation?

For a $1.99 donation you get a Toby Keith CD.
$3 gets you a hand strung set of rosary beads.

If you are feeling particularly charitable, we can put you down for a calendar.

It's not all about the railroad, though. A portion of the funds will go toward lobbying for a bill to allow them CO status.

63. Um
this is satire. Humor, you know? Go back and read it from that point of view. Of course, explaining it makes it no longer funny.

And it was funny. Very funny.

You don't need to help out with railroad if you don't want, but laughing at the poor pharmacists is kind of rude. I've half a mind to alert on you.

60. Yes, clearly they need understanding and compassion. Some certainly
suffer PTSD when they think about all the sin and fornication they may have enabled by, say, not properly quizzing a woman on her marital status or relationship with Jesus before dispensing her pills.

66. I Must Agree, but as others have suggested,
these poor put-upon souls need more to supplement their income besides modeling white coats. Shoot, any one person with a six-year degree can do that.

I could offer shelter underneath my deck. They could fight off the poison ivy and compete with the raccoons for the biscuits I put out. It will keep the raccoons from getting lazy and fat. Then, during the day, the rebel pharmacists could earn some money by doing yard work for me. Then, at night, more biscuits.

And also, they would get a dollar a day for keeping the raccoons out of the garden. Then I could give them a tomato.

Don't let anyone say I don't have compassion. Someday, they shall be free! When the yard work gets done. Then I shall send them to the next stop on the Rx Rx railroad.

But, just a question, can they still bring some drugs?

That's a great idea, you know. We could hide them out under our decks and they can earn their keep doing yard work...I just hope they don't eat me out of house and biscuits. The canned ones breaks my nails.

76. Can somebody explain why we even need pharmacists?
Seriously? What gives? I think it's time for these guys to step down from their three foot high lair in the back of the supermarket and give it up for good. We have automatic pill dispensing machines, computers that can track drug cross reactions, and online prescription filling. I really don't think these "conscientious" pill fillers want to push this issue 'cause the pharmobot2000 is ready to fill your prescription!

Oh and btw when the pharmobot2000 says ten minutes it means ten minutes not an hour with the eventual we-haven't-called-your-doctor-to-confirm-yet-but-it-wouldn't-even-matter-because-we-don't-have-the-pills-in-stock-anyway-but-could-you-come-back-tomorrow revelation!

They put the REAL, TRUE BLUE Phamacists at risk - the ones who are out there on the front line, while the cowardly CO claim their convictions while hiding back amongst the dispensarys. They should either be jailed as traitors or they should LEAVE MY COUNTRY.

84. Pharmacists "serve their country"?
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 06:54 AM by Totally Committed
No. They go to school. They learn a trade. They apply for a job. They draw a salary.

They are not soldiers.

They are not public servants.

They are EMPLOYEES who chose to go to school for years and enter a field where they knew that their job would be filling prescriptions written by doctors. To claim this moral and ethical bullshit after all that is just ridiculous. Either they will do the job they trained years to do, or they won't. Simple as that.

If they cannot bring themselves to do the job they studied years for, applied for, and were hired for, then it's time to hit the unemployment line until they find something to do where their "moral" and "ethical" beliefs won't effect my rights under the law.

What a steaming pile of horse-hockey!

Here's a question (posted without having read this thread yet, which I am about to do, so apologies if this is a dupe): Have any of you thought that maybe all these ethics-stricken pharmacists crawling out of the woodwork suddenly knew exactly what they were doing when they went to Pharmacological School? That this was all planned by the Anti-Choicers to gum up the works until they can overturn Roe v Wade, and then pass much stronger anti-birth control laws? That this is just the opening salvo in the war to deny all birth control? Mark my words, this is what we are looking at.

Please please do not become the sort of person that spits on pharmacists when they come home. I don't think that helps our cause at all. It's possible to support the pharmacists even if you don't support the store.

91. the answer is simple in Europe, at least in France
even if opening a pharmacy can be of private nature (personal investment) to run one you have to be a pharmacist. The studies are equivalent to the one of being a doctor (though you don't have the right to exercise medecine). To have your license to exercise pharmacy
you must be a member of the national association of pharmacists. Since the deontology code is regulated by law, you cannot refuse to deliver any prescripted medecine unless you suspect there is obvious fraud.

the obligation not to refuse is to avoid discrimination based on prejudices or faith. Because the "right to refuse" can be applied to gays, pregnant single mothers, Jews, Arabs (depending on your personal beliefs). So it's forbiden to refuse by law.

Morality : if you are a bigot, don't become a pharmacist. At least in the US the goverment will have plenty of jobs for you anyway.

92. Thanks for all the Support
Based on the level of interest and support in this thread, I believe it's time to move into action. I'm getting ready to contact Pharmacists for Life, and I see they really don't have a catchy slogan. I figured I could build up some trust with them if I help them out with their marketing.

Which do you think is better:

Fighting For Your Rights (Unless You're Not A Pharmacist)

or

Protection For Everyone
(Unless You Have Sex In Which Case You Are Going To Hell And We Can't Protect You From That)

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Oh, and I'm trying to keep these short enough that they can fit on a bumper sticker. Or at least on like two or three bumperstickers that you can attach side by side.

if they can't fulfill a public duty, they should find a different job.

if you can't provide the medications doctors order, you shouldn't be a pharmacist.

just like a Quaker shouldn't be a machine gunner.
