It was old-home week, sort of, for the House Appropriations Committee Monday when former U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of Lufkin was in Washington for a reception honoring his unsung role in helping Afghanistan's mujaheddin drive Soviet invaders out of their country.
The former House Appropriations Committee member was joined by Joanne Herring Davis and actor Tom Hanks, who has bought the film rights to Charlie Wilson's War by George Crile. Davis, who played a key role in the book, reports that Hanks handed out copies of the tome to all who attended the reception.
House Appropriations Committee chairman Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., organized the reception at the Sam Rayburn House Office Building, where more than 100 dignitaries, operatives and friends, including Rep. Tom DeLay and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, turned out.
That night, Davis and Houston pal Desiree Lyon Howe supped with Washington Times editor-at-large Arnaud de Borchgrave and his wife, Alexandra. Howe was in the capital to deliver a speech on prostate cancer.
