Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley became Alabama's first woman Lieutenant Governor upon her election November 5, 2002. A native of Houston County, Governor Baxley was elected to two terms as Alabama State Treasurer, serving 1995-2003.http://www.legislature.state.al.us/senate/senators/senatebios/baxley_l.htmlLast week I was sitting here (as usual) when an e-mail came in for Mrs. t.
A friend asked if she'd be interested in meeting and hearing Alabama Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley at the upcoming Baldwin County Democratic Women's Club luncheon.
I'm not a woman, but...shoot...I'd like to go.
"Can guys come?"
"Why not?", she e-mailed back. "As long as you pay your 11 bucks for the luncheon."
We arrived at the restaurant at 11:30.
I was the only guy there.
Not even a waiter on the staff.
I had a ball.
There were 8 at our table, maybe 100+ in all. It was like a giant "outing". Baldwin County is very predominantly repug. Us Dems tend to keep a low profile. I was real curious to see who showed up. There were several women I knew, and had no idea they were Dems. At one point I was surrounded by a couple of dozen women and one said "I heard something about bush* being AWOL. Do you know anything about that?".
Oh baby! Stand back and give me room! I held forth with chapter and verse about one of my favorite subjects and one that I know quite a bit about. They were shocked. Not just at his actions, but also at why the media hasn't made a big deal out of this. Especially during the campaign.
Then Lt. Gov. Baxley spoke. She gave a brief bio, family, education, job (realtor), working on her local school board and county Democratic Committee. Her years as state treasurer. As Lt. Gov., she presides over the senate. She asked what of her qualifications we thought best suited her for the job of riding herd on the mostly male senate? Pause. "Child rearing." It brought down the house. I was sitting in the front row (not my choice, but the only seats left) and she kind of looked at me for my response. Was the sole male present gonna get all bent out of shape? I was laughing so hard the tears were running down my cheeks. We exchanged a glance and I nodded. She was on solid ground as far as I was concerned. I wish I could remember all the stories she told about trying to keep all those "little boys" straightened out. I came away with the impression that she is witty, intelligent, tough, and funny as hell. I spoke to her afterwards and thanked her for making the trip down to speak to us. She said "Honey, when I saw you in the front row I wasn't sure how this was gonna go. Thanks."
If she'll run for governor, she's got my vote.
Interesting (to me anyway) note:
There are 35 senators. 3 are women.
2 A-A Dems and 1 white repug.
