New GOPUSA News Service, Cybercast News, Replaces Talon News; Now Embroiled in Scandal Over Flooding Google News With Identical Jeff Gannon Articles
---------------------------
As our readership is undoubtedly aware, Google News is one of the primary news directories utilized by online-only conservative, moderate, progressive, and non-partisan media outlets. Talon News, prior to its implosion over the Gannongate scandal, was one of hundreds of online-only media outlets which might have expected to receive additional attention from the public via a listing in Google News.

Now, the new "news service" client being contracted with by GOPUSA.com, Cybercast News Service (CNS), has found itself embroiled in a scandal just days after replacing the controversial Talon News Service for which now-disgraced "reporter" Jeff Gannon was a writer.

The U.S. Senate and U.S. House refused to recognize Talon News as a credible news organization, citing its inextricable ties to a Republican activist website—GOPUSA.com. Cybercast News Service, headed by Brent Bozell, bears striking similarities to Talon News, apart from its association as a news client for GOPUSA.com.

(snip)

The Advocate confronted Hogenson with evidence that his organization has "Google-bombed" on the Jeff Gannon story, but Hogenson denied doing so, said CNS has been doing what it's been doing for years, and showed no inclination whatsoever to reconsider what The Advocate worries are unfair, unprofessional, and anti-competitive business practices. The Advocate had previously notified CNS by e-mail that it would lodge a complaint with Google News if CNS did not cease its so-called "Google-bombing" operations.

Google bomb

A Google bomb or Google wash is an attempt to influence the ranking of a given site in results returned by Google. Due to the way that Google's algorithm works, a website will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page all use consistent text. Googlebomb is used both as a verb and a noun.

For example, if a user registers many domains and all of them link to a main site with the text "... is a living legend" then searching for "living legend" on Google will return the main site higher in the ranking, even if the phrase "living legend" doesn't appear on the main site. A common means of exploiting this is through weblogs, where although the entry may disappear from the main page quickly, the short-term effects of a link can dramatically affect the ranking of a given site. Empirical results indicate that it does not take a large number of websites to achieve a Googlebomb. The effect has been achieved with only a handful of dedicated weblogs.

The technique was first discussed on April 6, 2001 in an article by Adam Mathes. In that article, he coined the term "Google bombing" and explained how he discovered that Google used the technique to calculate page rankings. He found that a search for "internet rockstar" returned the website of Ben Brown as the first result, even though "internet rockstar" did not appear anywhere on Brown's webpage. He reasoned that Google's algorithm returned it as the first result because many fan sites that linked to Brown's website used that phrase on their own pages.

Mathes began testing his theory by setting out to make the website of his friend Andy Pressman the number one result for a query of "talentless hack". He gave instructions for creating websites and links to Pressman's website with the text of the link reading "talentless hack". Sure enough, as other webloggers joined in his Googlebombing campaign, Pressman's website became the number one result in a Google search for "talentless hack". (Ironically, by 2004, Mathes's own site was the number one Google result of this search term.)

Santorum "Spreading Santorum," a campaign to ridicule Senator Santorum by naming a mixture of bodily substances after him (see Santorum controversy).

7. You've got some great stuff here, Ian!
From one underground clown to another, for what it's worth...
SO MUCH talents on these boards; I'm new to it all (finally got hi-speed), and it's kinda nice to know I'm not the only one huddled in a dark undisclosed location doing stuff like this...
Anyway, kudos!, and keep 'em comin'!

6. Oh. Just another Scandal in these Scandalous Days.
Gannon, or whatever the hell his name is; GOPUSA.com, Talon News, and you'd think the words "credible," News" and "organization" would be a shame in itself, used in the same sentence as those bunch of crooks.
