Now Bush wants to test every American for mental illness--including you!

Now Bush wants to test every American for mental illness -- including you!
And guess who will create the tests?
By Jordanne Graham

Next month, President Bush plans to unveil a broad new mental health plan called the “New Freedom Initiative.” Never mind that it couldn’t have less to do with freedom....

The New Freedom Initiative proposes to screen every American, including you, for mental illness. To this end, the president established a New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, to study the nation’s mental health delivery service and make a report. It’s interesting to note that many on the staff appointed to the Commission have served on the advisory boards of some of the nation’s largest drug companies.

The commission reported that “despite their prevalence, mental disorders often go undiagnosed,” so it recommended comprehensive mental health screening for “consumers of all ages,” including preschool children...

= = =

Looks like another chance for Bush's buddies in the pharma industry to line their pockets.

Not to mention, a great way to lock up or medicate people who don't conform to the government's definition of "sanity".

I would imagine even the freepers would be up in arms about something like this - government meddling in private lives and all.

60. Calvin Trillin had a good one about Ashcroft speaking in tongues
He said that he didn't mind it so much, it was what he was saying in English that scared him.

When you think about it, speaking in tongues is a shockingly logical expression of fundamentalism: making a lot of emphatic noise without the slightest idea what one's saying...

"Not to mention, a great way to lock up or medicate people who don't conform to the government's definition of "sanity"."

Think of everything the government has done in the past 4 years to exert a "Brave New World" or "1984" kind of control over the population. Are the Democrats just lying down for this latest intrusion?

They can't force us to get tested.

If they come for you and want an interview or a sample of your bodily fluids, say "Fine with me - as long as you pay me the fair market value of one million dollars for the interview - my hourly billing rate - plus one million dollars per gram of my bodily tissues."

Fight capitalism with capitalism.

When this was posted before, I brought up that this has already been passed in Illinois, and going into effect.

The proper links were given.

So, rather than pooh-poohing, I suggest you search here for that thread and the links, or google Illinios.

I was just trying to be optimistic, and inspiring.

What I actually should have said was "*I* won't stand for this."

But lots of sheeple will probably just meekly go to their diagnosis.

Maybe they'll rationalize by dreaming about all the free, legal happy-drugs they'll get!

Well, I still challenge you to google Illinois and this law....

Or..... search here for the thread "Bush wants to be your shrink"

And, for the record, I don't find false optimism to be particularly inspiring. There is a real reason for alerting people to what is coming down the pike. Otherwise, we're no different from the repunks doing their ostrich impressions.

12. I think this is a ploy to line his contributor's pockets
Only big business will benefit from this. Oh, sure they might catch a few people who would otherwise slip through the cracks. But most people who are mentally ill only get help when they want to. It's easy enough to lie about your mental state if you don't want people to know your true feelings. I did it for years before I finally had a melt down. This new commision that Bush wants to start will be a total waste in taxpayer money and will probably result in people going on meds who don't really need to.

to "Mental Health" or getting inside your "mind", and what's with the "Freedom" - to be patriotic?

Kinda like the "clean air or healthy forests"....it always is named the "opposite" of what it really is....so, the opposite of Freedom is....Slavery? Control?

Take that a step further and let your imagination go wild on the real intent....very scary....

Here is a great analysis of abusive language in *'s State of the Union speech in 2003.

(The Power of the Presidency Resides in Language)

One tactic is using puffy rhetoric that doesn't mean much and clouds rational thought.

And the call-it-the-opposite-of-what-it-is ploy works because the repetition of the name (even in criticism) has an absolute value that
wins minds.

52. Not a laughing matter
Recently read a book called "The State Boys Rebellion". Back in the 1920's, eugenics was a big thing in the US, though many people don't realize it. (As a matter of fact, the Nazis got a lot of their info initially from American eugenics societies) Spurred by this movement, the government got into the business of screening children by IQ and convincing parents to send their "defective" youngsters to state run homes. Many of these kids were actaully of normal intelligence but their scores were low for a variety of reasons (lack of formal schooling, inadequate diet or improper testing procedures, for example).

The homes kept many of these kids, particularly those who were wards of the state, for virtually their entire lives, treating them abysmally, providing them with almost no education and requiring them to work at menial tasks that either helped run the facility or provided some income to the home (never to the kid).

It's a grim read and a red flag, if you ask me. This type of program will ALWAYS lead to abuses.

57. You're so right, and thanks for the history reminder.
I think people are laughing because this is scary, and we don't know what to do. But, I want people to realize that everything has gotten so out of hand that all this could come to pass while we're making jokes.

The reason, as I said before, that this is so serious is that NO WAY can there be individual solutions to this. People are now talking about moving out of Illinois to get away from the law there, but if * gets away with this (and what's to stop him?), there won't be anywhere to run to.

No, this is one thing that is going to require that we do what is hardest for Murkins to do..... come together to fight this.

59. LOL!

65. 'Welcome to the Monkey House' by Kurt Vonnegut. Pills to kill libido.
This is a book about a society kept numb from the waist down to prevent sexual pleasure as a social control device.

The rebels don't take the pills.

What an appropriate title with Chimpy McWarHardOn in the White House.

69. ANOTHER attempted intrusion by the government into our lives
Jeesh, I can see how loading the family property into the wagon and heading out to about 100 heavily fenced acres in the middle of nowhere, arming yourselves to the teeth and surviving off your land can become an attractive idea.
