Rolling Thunder (mostly Vietnam vets) endorses Bush over Kerry......
It is known that the leader of the the group is a strong Repub and supporter of Bush, but it is not known if the support was unanimous or even if there was a vote. However, Bush in dire need of votes, is willing to take votes from just about any source that is presently not incarcerated...

10. Saw that interview.
He boasted how much Bush has done for vets, and how little Clinton did. You're right, a freep.

2. Probably USAF wingnuts. Rolling Thunder = B52 Strike
- Strange people.
- Maybe war's not that bad from 30,000 feet.
- Back at the O Club by 1600 hours.
- The grunts are still out in the bush.

11. They never noticed ...

That all the troops they were carpet bombing simply slipped into their tunnels. Meanwhile, the civilians died horrible deaths.

I guess you don't see any of that shit from 10,000 feet.

7. You're thinking of the Rolling Thunder Democracy Tour
which is definitely working to oust the shrubbery.

What is the Rolling Thunder Democracy Tour?
It's a county fair with guts. A revival with a reason. A concert with consciousness. A festival with funk and function. The Rolling Thunder Down-Home Democracy Tour reawakens a great American tradition of asserting the power of regular people to fight for their rights; throws in some enlightening education, soul-stirring music, mouth-watering food and drink; tops it off with a good jolt of Jim Hightower wit and wisdom, plus invigorating insight from firebrand speakers ranging from Jesse Jackson Jr. to Barbara Ehrenreich, and shazam! It creates a thunderstorm of motivated minds and bodies demanding our democracy back from the greedheads and boneheads who have taken it hostage. Oh, and most importantly, we intend to have one hell of a good time every step of the way back to true democracy.

Jim Hightower has teamed up with the numerous folks and groups listed on the back to bring this democracy organizing festival - a community gathering reminiscent of the Chautauquas of yore - to various towns across the United States. We'll work with groups who are yearning to solidify and strengthen the ties between community organizations and constituencies who share a bottom line - empowering people, but who focus on different issues. This tour aims to foster collaborative efforts that benefit us all, especially at the local level.

Consider bringing together a large and broad group of progressive constituencies (not just leaders) to spend a day or two in a sort of citizenship fair — learning from each other, getting top-notch training on everything from media work to fundraising, having activist workshops on issues and organizing, participating in both short-term and long-term strategizing sessions, getting energized by two or three rousing speeches, joining in a march or demonstration, and simply celebrating and reflecting on the breadth, depth, and power of grassroots progressive activism.

9. Rolling Thunder here in Seattle is associated with Jim Hightower
I've been to a meeting or two -- aging hippies running the thing. But they were certainly angling for how to cut themselves in for $$. Yet, they seem to be doing progressive causes. What gives?

12. Judy Woodruff interviewed him
She asked what he thought of Buxh cutting benefits for vets.
He just claimed that it wasn't happening. I imagine he's rich from tax cuts, too.

13. To some,
Edited on Sun May-30-04 04:19 PM by mmonk
no war is wrong, no war not worth fighting, no war not worth following blindly. I think Vietnam was an error at best, but don't disdain those who fought it. I do disdain glorification of it or any other war of choice not necessary. I honor those who were truly doing it for what they thought was right.

15. I think a lot of these people felt we were somehow shamed
By the fact we didn't destroy Vietnam. They've been looking for some kind of redemption ever since. Kinda like losing the Super Bowl and screaming "Wait'll next year"!

17. Yep,
they don't understand that a lot of the world thought the shame was in fighting it to begin with.

16. Bikers very Republican
Biggest reason -- Democrats passed helmet laws and 55 mile per hour speed limits in the west. Republicans repealed them both.

18. One of those "Rolling Thunder Guys" winked at me at an Anti-Iraq Invasion
protest just before the Chimp Invaded. There were three of them who came down the street where we had our "Protest" signs and they were "gunning" their Harleys or whatever they drive...and looking like "real mean dudes" with flags and stuff waving off the back...and some of us thought they were going to jump out and attack us, but one of them "winked" and I don't know if he thought I was "cute" and wanted to chat me up, or not, but I took it to mean he thought my sign and sentiments were good. (One of my signs was "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" and the other was "No War for Oil Profits."}

After creating a "fear disturbance" with their reving engines and flags flying and helmits with slogans they finally left us alone.

When I posted my "disturbing experience" on DU later, I was told they were "harmless" and were really just trying to get the "MIA's" from Viet Nam home.

Now...I wonder about their loyalties. Maybe that one that "winked" at me was sincere, or maybe he really did think I was cute.

22. hmm
if they think repubs have done so much for vets, I'm thinking none of them have had to get any health care in the last year or two. How about 2 to 3 month wait for appts at va med facility. My brother in law had to endure that and he had lung cancer. I say had cuz he's dead now. great care he got.
