29. CSI
It refers to a report of a CBS News special report that Arafat had died where the producer got fired because he broke into the last few minutes of CSI - NY to make the special announcement. Apparently CSI and its viewers were more important than the breaking news. Although, to be fair, Arafat had been dead and undead for most of the week, but it probably didn't warrant the producer being fired.

33. Arafat was taken to the hospital
and he expired there...heralding an end of an era and a promise of a new chapter. There are also rumours of Arafat being accelerated towards death (e.g., poisoning) in order to pursue an agenda. Regardless of the cause of death, Arafat's death marked how an influential politician with many ties to shadowy groups has such impact on society. Cheney is another figure with heavy influence and ties.

Ara-fated was just a play on words...seems fitting.

72. Yes, absolutely
The only requirement is that the President and the VP not be from the same state, which is why Cheney moved from Dallas to Wyoming a few days before he announced that he had done a VP search, and could not find anyone better than...HIMSELF.

What an interesting theory--put the brother who can TALK out front, while letting the trolls and gnomes of pure evil hide deep within the West Wing, doing their nefarious work.

Holy Moly.....

He's corrupt and exteme enough. But the more I think about it, Jeb is seeming more likely. It would be insanely over the top, but, well...bushes after all.

I wouldn't rule out Rice, either. If they wanted to promote their dogma AND do as much damage to dems as possible, the seemingly (deceptively) inclusive choice of an African American Woman would do it.

Because you disagree with him on political issues ? Why not challenge those you disagree with to a duel ala Aaron Burr and at least have the pleasure of an honest kill, rather than waiting around for fate to do your work.

Because this sonofabitch started a fucking war so he could make money! WTF is wrong with you. Have you been watching the news, have you looked at the papers. Do you see what we have done in Iraq. Iraq couldn't project its power past its own borders and we invaded so that the Halliburton's, Bechtel's, Carlyle's, Raytheon's, the oil/war machine would be propped up ... your tax dollars and American blood are the price being paid to "save" 20th Century robber barons. WAKE THE FUCK UP!

156. I am awake
and wondering how Democrats can win national elections if all they do is yell "Halliburton", "no blood for oil", etc. Bush won re-election and brought along gains in the house and senate. That hasn't happened since 1936. NINETEEN THIRTY SIX. That was a long time ago and the president was FDR !

I am afraid that the attitude you express is a real winner for the Republicans.

But why am I a fake Democrat ? Because you disagree with some of my opinions ? Last time I checked in, say in the Democratic primaries, I saw plenty of Democrats disagreeing with each other. Remember Dean, Lieberman, Gephardt, Kerry, etc. ?

America has a 2 party system, and has almost from the time Washington first took the oath of office in 1789. That means the parties tend to be big tent or else they die; consider the Federalists. If you wish me to go away, where do you want me to go ?

327. Let me say it then
The website you (probably) refer to is Free Republic. I can't go back there, because I am not a member there. Will admit to lurking from time to time.

How am I a disruptor ? I do not attack other posters, nor do I attack any public figure under discussion. I do not resort to ridicule or insult.

Yes, I do think the UN is seriously disfunctional, and not because of leadership, but because of it's very nature. I don't remember quoting CentCom re: Iraq, (but will grant I might have). Yes, I don't think the 2000 election was stolen. I think the vote in FL was a statistical dead heat, but that the tabulated votes gave Bush a miniscule victory.

Your either/or supposition as to why I am here is not sufficiently nuanced. There are other possible reasons, the most likely being that I enjoy the give and take I find here. But I can assure I am here "honestly" - I pay my ISP bill, I am registered here with a login/password, you know - full meal deal, etc.

As to being misinformed, that could be. How can I respond to such a charge ? If I am misinformed then how would I know, if I'm not misinformed, there can always be the lingering doubt in my mind that perhaps I am misinformed. Obviously, this applies to everyone, so is essentially no argument at all.

...as a poison pill to prevent impeachment of Bush*. It would work like this - they have some guy who seems mentally unstable, has had some sort of cosmetic dentistry done to make him look like he has fangs, has hair growing out of his face all over the place, perhaps implanted with follicle transplants as well, plus he wears a letter jacket just to taunt us that they ripped off the whole thing from the Michael Jackson "Thriller" video but we're still scared anyways, and have him be the VP. People get more scared of the Thriller Werewolf being president than Bush*, so they never impeach Bush*.

120. Republicans are smarter than that
Look, Bush has a mess on his hands and by winning re-election, it's his, 100%. If things are still a mess in 2008, what would be the chance for his handpicked boy to win ? About zero I would guess.

Since Cheney won't run in '08, whoever wins the Republican nomination won't have direct ties to the Bush administration, hence no baggage in that regard. The best thing for the Republicans in '08 is that they can have their cake and eat it too: Consider Guiliani or McCain - sure they supported Bush's re-election, but neither is part of the administration. If Bush pulls it out, then they can use his legacy as part of their campaign. If Bush fails, they can easily distance themselves.

Think back and consider how often being the sitting Veep has got the Veep elected president:

1960 Nixon NO
1968 Humphrey NO
1988 Bush YES
2000 Gore NO

Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 01:48 PM by Minstrel Boy
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe

But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher

You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled

Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

I said, "It is up to you oh Lord!"

And yeah, there is a God, I have no doubt!

71. I believe Congress will have to pick the Vice President
Amendment XXV (1967)

Section 1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

...and not impossible at all. The wingnuts would like him, but Frist, BEFORE the election, could have had bigger negatives than Cheney actually did. No one likes an asshole who goes to Angell Memorial, picks up a kitten every few weeks, pays the eleven bucks for shots and so forth, and then VIVISECTS it on the kitchen table. A cretinous man, a horrific, disgusting human being.

If the kitty killer story ever got wide play, it would have sunk the weecowboy. But now that he is IN, he can pick Satan himself--he's got the entire GOP Congress farting to his tune (thus, he has the wind at his back).

"Frist acknowledged in a 1989 book that he routinely killed cats while an ambitious medical student at Harvard Medical School in the 1970s. His office said it had no record on how many cats died. Frist disclosed that he went to animal shelters and pretended to adopt the cats, telling shelter personnel he intended to keep them as pets. Instead he used them to sharpen his surgical skills, killing them in the process."

I want to hear the word "kitten" in every other sentence from our surrogates' mouths for the first few months of 2008. Just like they used "flip-flop" for Kerry.

Additionally, I want to hear "holds interests in a pro-abortion healthcare business" in every other sentence as well. As in, "his father and brother run a healthcare business that provides abortion services, and he has given them his financial support."

298. That's precisely why Giuliani will never be VP under Bush.
He's Catholic, an adulterer, pro-Gay (actually lived with a Gay couple after his marriage ended), a fairly responsible executive, and very charismatic. Much more a Rockefeller Republican than a Bush Neo-Conservative.

He'd outshine Dubya the moment he took office. People would probably immediately call for Dubya to resign so Rudy could take his place.

Ain't no way this is going to happen. I'd sooner put money on Condi Rice.

159. That's an interesting choice too
Makes you wonder, if this might be part of the GRAND PLAN. All I can do is think of the constipated expression on McCain's face whilst he campaigned with weecowboy. He really did look like he was on the receiving end of a brutal protological exam by Dr. Edward Scissorhands. But hey, he's a war hero, he suffered grave torture at the Hilton, and he bravely saw that through--I suppose campaigning with weewee could not have been too much worse, and it had a 'knowable' time limit on it. Perhaps having to kowtow to weecowboy on the campaign trail was a "quid pro quo" for this eventuality.

And it would position McCain for 08--the bottom line is, if McCain is not well positioned, he may as well give it up--he's getting too old to have to fight his way through a pack of pretenders, but if he is the putative leader of the party, there won't be too many challengers (at least amongst those who want to continue to get cash from the RNC coffers).

THAT SAID, we need someone to tell us what the rules are vis a vis the replacement of a Senator in both AZ and TN--special elections, or gubernatorial appointment? Or a combination thereof????

Cheney, Short of Breath, Heads to Hospital

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney, who has a history of heart trouble, was being taken to a hospital on Saturday for tests after experiencing some shortness of breath, a White House spokesman said.

"On the recommendation of his doctors, the vice president is going to George Washington University Hospital for some tests," spokesman Ken Lisaius said. "He experienced some shortness of breath Saturday morning and has had a bad cold, which could be the cause for the shortness of breath."

President Bush was notified, Lisaius said.

Cheney's cardiologist, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, was to oversee the tests.

168. Anyone think this is a distraction?
Doesn't the recounting in Ohio start today? Isn't Fallujah spinning out of control? Didn't the former CEO of Halliburton just die in a strange way? Why was it FAUX that broke the story? Didn't the Deputy CIA chief just resign, warning of dire turmoil in the agency?

What better way to tie up news coverage (not that there was that much, anyway) than to suddenly become a bit "short of breath."

Am I too cynical?

Of course, if you go over there now they are all claiming they prayed relentlessly for him. Funny how that works, huh?

297. I am inclined to agree with you on this one.
I am REALLY REALLY endeavoring NOT to think such thoughts.

Things are unfolding PERFECTLY, as they should.

All things will be revealed.

There IS darkness before the dawn.

Sometimes good and the truth take a little longer.

All will be revealed.

We have to concentrate on GOOD thoughts and the LIGHT. We cannot sink to THEIR level.

But we don't have to mourn this bit of news, either.

Like your mother said - "If you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all".

I choose to say nothing at this time.

I don't wish for his death, but I certainly can't say that I'll be sorry to see him go when his date with the Grim Reaper comes, considering all of the grief, heartache and suffering he has caused for so many people. His lust for power knows no bounds, and he shown no remorse for the innocent lives he has destroyed for his selfish ambitions.

He deserves whatever he's got coming to him. In spades.

311. Cheney is a liar, a thief, a murderer, and a traitor.
So I can understand why some would want to piss on the grave of a man who lied - who continues to lie daily - and aided in the death of tens of thousands of people while raping the Treasury and shredding the Constitution.

I'm not saying I'm going to piss on his grave when he finally, happily, shuffles off this mortal coil into the hell he's prepared for himself through his own actions - but I won't say that I WON'T, either.

Fuck Cheney. If he recovers, fine, it'll make seeing him up on war crimes charges worth it. If he dies, fine, one less unAmerican bloodsucker parasiting off the American citizenry.

If that makes me worse than some newbie who wants to rise above it to get on with "the healing", you'll forgive me for not really caring.

Dale Jones, former Halliburton leader (dies)

Nov. 13, 2004
Houston Chronicle

DALLAS - Dale Paschal Jones, a former Baylor University regent and president of Halliburton Corp. who was known as much for his devotion to Christian ministry as his business skills, has died of complications from a head injury. He was 68.

Jones, who led the multi-billion-dollar oil-services corporation before Vice President Dick Cheney took over in 1995, died Nov. 6 at a Houston hospital.

He had struck his head while hurrying under a closing garage door after triggering an inside control, his family said.

Though his injury appeared to be minor, it caused internal bleeding that put pressure on his brain.

222. Jeb, and congestive heart failure
1. Jeb. Eight years. It could happen.

2. Important points about the few clues we have.

A. It's worse than they're telling us. Cheney has the facilities always at hand to treat a heart attack and to diagnose shortness of breath. So why is he at the hospital?

B. They're doing "serial EKGs" and probably cardiac enzymes (three blood tests six hours apart) to determine heart damage. They could do that at home. Why is he at the hospital?

C. Shortness of breath can also signal Congestive Heart Failure OR a pulmonary problem. Pneumonia, maybe. Pulmonary edema? I've always assumed that he had some measure of CHF because of his puffiness.

Exactly what I was thnking...he was clearly forced at his debate and exercising physical restraint and pacing himself. He is not well...to say the least.

May I add D. He knows something's gonna happen in the next few days and it pushed him into crisis. My dad went thru the same thing with his CHF/Renal Railure - had emotional episode which IMO, precipitated his decline.

287. Don't overlook the Dynasty Factor
No matter what they say, the Bush family is highly into what they consider a dynastic era. My bet is on Jeb. GW would put on a face like, "I just can't go on, unless Jeb helps me." Then -- 8 more years.

Problem is, Jeb has a few smarts, and he can talk. Lots of other problems, but the far right has been very willing to overlook those kinds of problems, lately.

I'm not surprised that Cheney might really be sick, after that campaign, but no sympathy here. He chose to do that.

That old saying "What comes around, goes around" comes to mind.

Cheney Protects Rumsfeld's Job Until the Spring
BY JAMIE DETTMER - Staff Reporter of the Sun
November 12, 2004

WASHINGTON - Donald Rumsfeld is likely to remain at the Pentagon until the spring, enabling him to to stay in the administration through the Iraqi elections and advance his plans for transforming the American military, despite strong pressure from key White House political advisers for him to leave sooner.

According to well-placed Pentagon sources, Vice President Cheney has argued the case for Mr. Rumsfeld to remain as defense secretary until at least the spring, and Mr. Cheney would prefer that Mr. Rumsfeld stayed longer.

Karl Rove and other White House advisers, however, have maintained that Mr. Rumsfeld has become a political liability and will undermine possible improvement in relations between Washington and European allies, the sources said. "The White House political shop wants him out now," a senior Defense Department source said of Mr. Rumsfeld.

Much will depend on what happens with the national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice. Administration officials told The New York Sun that Ms. Rice, who spearheaded the White House's decision a year ago to take command from the Pentagon of the American occupation of Iraq, wants to replace Mr. Rumsfeld.

Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rumsfeld are old friends who served together in the Ford administration, and the vice president was instrumental in getting Mr. Rumsfeld appointed defense secretary in the first place.

"Dear God,

We pray to you now to ask...please win brother Buddy his steak dinner. Not just any steak dinner. A hundred dollar steak dinner. Like maybe a nice Porterhouse. With a baked potato...covered in sour cream....chives...and bacon bits. With all your omnipotent powers...we ask that you give brother Buddy a hand in his 4 year journey for this meal. So that he may point and laugh at his Dad as grade A prime juice runs down his chin...only to be washed down with a nice Chianti.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ...our savior (and a beef lover himself)....

Amen"

Thanks for your prayers everybody.

290. I wish no man harm
I harbor no man ill will. (Honest, look at my avatar.) However, I do feel a song comin' on...

    Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
    You that hide behind walls
    You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

    You that never done nothin'
    But build to destroy
    You play with my world
    Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
    When the fast bullets fly

    Like Judas of old
    You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
    You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
    That runs down my drain

    You fasten the triggers
    For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
    You hide in your mansion
    As young people's blood
    Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

    You've thrown the worst fear
    That can ever be hurled
    Fear to bring children
    Into the world
    For threatening my baby
    Unborn and unnamed
    You ain't worth the blood
    That runs in your veins

    How much do I know
    To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
    You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
    Though I'm younger than you
    Even Jesus would never
    Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
    Is your money that good
    Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
    I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
    All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
    And your death'll come soon
    I will follow your casket
    In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
    Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
