AP breaking: 7 soldiers killed in Baghdad
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 04:08 PM by TheWebHead
per Faux News...

edit:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Seven U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday in fighting with Shiite militiamen in the Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City, the U.S. military said. At least 24 other American troops were wounded, the military said in a written statement.

Elsewhere Sunday, supporters of an anti-U.S. Shiite Muslim cleric waged violent demonstrations in four Iraqi cities, punctuated by a gun battle at the Spanish garrison near this Shiite holy city that killed at least 20 people, including two coalition soldiers — an American and a Salvadoran.

2. Just saw it on CNN
I think it was the total of the day that they had been reporting in several incidents, not 7 additional soldiers killed at once.

15. WebHead's linked story is saying 7 dead in Baghdad alone...
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 04:16 PM by alg0912
I don't think they're counting the 2 Marines killed near Falluja or the 1, maybe 2 US Soldiers killed in Najaf.

The AP link I found on Drudge (yeah, I know) said it was seven in Baghdad and two more Marines killed in another location.

These dumb asses don't care. Unless it is their son - which it is not now. But once they pull that lever for Bush and help him get reselected in November. They may get the opportunity to give up one of their young uns for their monkey god. These dumb asses will help Bush get reselected. I think as of today Bush will be reselected because America is stupid and Kerry's campaign is lousy. How can he lose?

It has been horrible enough as it has been in the past.

Today is Palm Sunday ... great day for massacres and murders and killing. I wonder if they are aware of this or does anyone care?

I think that Dennis Kucinich is absolutely correct. The whole election will come down to the issue of this "war" or invasion as I call it.

The problem will be which is the lesser of the "war mongers" between Kerry v. Bush? One is a war hero with purple hearts, etc. The other one is an AWOL coward. Which of the two will get us out of this mess?

Now even * is saying the UN in and the US out ... I heard it. Yes I did. Copying DK the lot of them. :grr: Can't give the man the credit he deserves.

Too bad no one has taken DK seriously. I'm hanging with DK till the bitter end, which won't be anytime real soon.

You never know what might happen between now and November.

I believe that DK will bring the troops home and get us the hell out of Iraq. It might not be overnight, but it will and can happen.

The Iraqi people do not want the Americans there. They want their country back! Sounds awfully familiar to me, what do you think?

:grr:

This is unbelievable. Also, one, maybe two (conflicting reports) US soldiers were killed in Najaf today, and two Marines lost their lives in Falluja.

The death toll may be ELEVEN today. Dear God.

19. Keep in mind...
...that to this point, we've actually seen very little mass resistance. The invasion of Iraq occurred virtually unopposed as Saddam's Republican Guard crumbled. The past few months have been dealing with "pockets of resistance". What happens when the whole nation declares a jihad against their "American Liberators"?

Also, we aren't counting those killed from other countries. How many Salvadoran troops died this weekend? British?

Bush was warned. Hell, Kerry was warned. And with everything else going on here at home, with Bush's lies... argh!

20. To avoid confusion, here's the toll for the last week
29-Mar: 2
1 - 13th COSCOM killed in IED attack, al-Habbiniyah;
1 - unit unnamed, killed in IED attack, Fallujah

30-Mar: 2
1 - I MEF killed in IED attack, Ramadi;
1 - 10th Special Forces, killed in vehicle rollover, Samarrah

31-Mar: 5
5 - 1ID killed in IED attack, 12 miles NW of Fallujah

1-Apr: 1
1 - I MEF, killed in hostile action, al-Anbar Province (near Fallujah)

2-Apr: 1
1 - 1AD, killed in IED attack, Baghdad

3-Apr: 1
1 - I MEF killed in hostile action, al-Anbar Province

4-Apr: 9
1 - I MEF killed in hostile action, al-Anbar Province;
7 - (1AD??) killed in ambush/ fighting, al-Sadr city section of Baghdad;
1 - unit unnamed, killed in action during protests, Najaf

There is a bit of confusion on this thread about the two Marine KIAs disclosed today. One of those Marines was killed on Saturday, April 3, while one was killed today. In short, I have 21 Americans killed in Iraq in the last 7 days, 20 in hostile action. That matches the total dead from the entire month of February, for the last week alone. We haven't seen 9 killed in one day since the last Blackhawk shootdown in Fallujah on January 8. That 7 were killed in ground fighting in al-Sadr City indicates that the area is a total war zone at this point, especially with 24 wounded from that fighting. And, needless to say, the fighting is ongoing. I provide these numbers not be be cold, or analytical. Just the opposite. At a certain point, these numbers should really evoke the horror of what is going on over there. The entire invasion is a disgraceful act from start to finish. My condolensces are with the families and survivors of all the dead, American and Iraqi.

33. Thank you for the clarification, Markses.

In Najaf, they've also changed the death count; Reuters now reports that one American and one Salvadoran soldier were killed, not four Salvadorans as earlier reported:

http://wireservice.wired.com/wired/story.asp?section=Breaking&storyId=845999&tw=wn_wire_story

So, the death toll for US soldiers today is at least nine throughout Iraq, with at least 40 wounded (in the Baghdad incident alone). Does that sound right to you? And it could be 10, if you count the Marine from late Saturday in Falluja?

And with the news blackout at Fallujah, God only knows what is really going on there. With this many coalition soldiers being killed, imagine the carnage on the Iraqi side, each death creating dozens more enemies for the unfortunate soldiers sent there on Bush's folly and illegal war.

23. As per the AP/Yahoo story - 10 US servicemen killed today
<snip>
Seven U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday in fighting with Shiite militiamen in the Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City, the U.S. military said. At least 24 other American troops were wounded

<snip>
The U.S. military also reported two Marines were killed in a separate "enemy action" in Anbar province

<snip>
The attackers opened fire at about noon, said Cmdr. Carlos Herradon, a spokesman for the Spanish headquarters in nearby Diwaniyah.

The Spanish and Salvadoran soldiers inside the garrison fired back, and assailants later regrouped in three clusters outside the base as the shooting continued for several hours.

Two soldiers — a Salvadoran and an American — died and nine other soldiers were wounded, the Spanish defense ministry said. No other details were available.

42. This is also proof of the fallacy of the "we broke it, we fix it"!
Senators Dick Lugar and Joe Biden, like Bob McNamara and Dean Rusk a generation ago, are calling for an escalation of the war in Iraq.

From a legal point of view, Iraq never surrendered after we took over the country. There was no surrender document signed, no ceremony as the one that took place on the USS Missouri on VJ Day.

A technical state of war still exists. However, there is no Iraqi army facing our troops, only the Iraqi people. I fear that our thirst for revenge, to pay back their revenge for our previous revenge, will only precipitate a nationwide intifada.

Like Dennis Kucinich says, bring the troops home!

Jesus never appeared in the shape of a burning pretzel to Saddam before.

That's why we're morally superior: Jesus is a Navy SEAL.

44. Speaking of the land of the big PX.........
When my husband got to Iraq last April, he talked of Burger Kings, Subways and Pizza Huts going up in trailers and how PX's were popping up in many localities. All I could think was-America can't furnish their own soldiers with needed supplies and lifesaving equipment but consumerism was alive and well in the middle of a war-zone.

Thank you!

34. Memory
I'm a college student, and I had a summer job last year that started early in the morning. NPR is just about the only thing that comes in clear at my house, so it was my wake up station on my clock radio.

Every weekday for three months, the first thing I would hear in the morning was how many soldiers had been killed in Iraq the previous day. It made me think about what the Vietnam era must have been like.

I'm with Kerry all the way, but I went to a Kucinich rally today and he said something I think we all need to keep in mind. The 9/11 hearings can be used as a political football and a way of piling blame on both parties for the next few months, but there's no question about who lied to get us into Iraq.

Bush is a damned barbarian, and he must be stopped.

57. I was referring more to the loss of initiative today.
Certainly he is a long-range mouth fighter, a desk
jockey, a successful bureaucrat, and a worthy peer
at least in attitude to Eichmann. But, as happens so
frequently, they express some aggressively moronic
sentiment and it promptly blows up in their faces.

Instead of trying to pour oil on the waters after the
killings and mutiliations of the mercenaries, they
make more threats and escalate the rhetoric, and bang
the whole country blows up in their faces and more
soldiers and Iraqi citizens die.

61. Forsaken
The sad part is that all deaths by violence are tragic. The American media has a way of keeping track that is, to put it kindly, very nationalistic and narrow minded.

May we some day realize that every life is worthwhile, that the ripple effects from each death touches family, friends, and the communities both local and global.

When will the madness end? A mother kills her babies, children shooting their schoolmates, men throwing themselves under tanks. It becomes too much to bear all this sadness.

Father, mother, why hast thou forsaken us?

We all know why...

O

83. 10 U.S. Troops Killed in Iraqi Violence
10 U.S. Troops Killed in Iraqi Violence

NAJAF, Iraq - Supporters of an anti-American cleric rioted in four Iraqi cities Sunday, killing eight U.S. troops and one Salvadoran soldier in the worst unrest since the spasm of looting and arson immediately after the fall of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

The U.S. military on Sunday reported two Marines were killed in a separate "enemy action" in Anbar province, raising the toll of American service members killed in Iraq (news - web sites) to at least 610.

The rioters were supporters of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. They were angry over Saturday's arrest on murder charges of one of al-Sadr's aides, Mustafa al-Yacoubi, and the closure of a pro-al-Sadr newspaper.

Near the holy city of Najaf, a gunbattle at a Spanish garrison killed at least 22 people, including two coalition soldiers — an American and a Salvadoran.
