Synagogues defaced in Chicago, Lincolnwood

Police were investigating today if instances of vandalism at at least four synagogues in Lincolnwood and Rogers Park were connected.


At about 4 a.m. the caretakers of the Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation, 7117 N. Crawford Ave., were awakened by the sound of breaking glass, said Steve Kramer, the synagogue's head of security.

The glass doors at the front of the building had been shattered by a brick and someone had scrawled "Free Palestine" and "Death to Israel" on the building in orange spray paint.

Recently the Israeli military has launched airstrikes and sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip, which Israel says is meant to deter rocket attacks by Hamas. The Chicago area has seen several protests the last two weeks, both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli.

At Anshe Motele Congregation, 6520 N. California Ave., "Death to Israel" also was sprayed in orange paint on the front door, said Rabbi Alan Abramson.

"We're not going anywhere," the rabbi said this evening; if people want to protest, "they don't have to deface a house of worship. ... Do it in a peaceful manner."

I don't personally conflate the state of Israel with all Jews but it's easy to see why a lot of people do, not all of them antisemites or sociopaths either.

Israel was specifically founded as "the Jewish state" and constantly reiterates that position, down to the point of having the very symbol of Judaism, the Star of David on their flag. Symbols are powerful things and the symbolism of Israel suggests that it represents all Jews everywhere.

Logic is seldom taught until post secondary education and even then not everyone takes those courses, in fact I'd be surprised if a majority of college graduates have ever taken a course in logic. There are a goodly number of logical fallacies, enough that the untrained person can very easily fall for plausible sounding illogic.
