Giant Rat Discovered in 'Lost World'
Source: AP

JAKARTA, Indonesia (Dec. 17) - Researchers in a remote jungle in Indonesia have discovered a giant rat and a tiny possum that are apparently new to science, underscoring the stunning biodiversity of the Southeast Asian nation, scientists said Monday.

The discoveries by a team of American and Indonesian scientists are being studied further to confirm their status.

The animals were found in the Foja mountains rainforest in eastern Papua province in a June expedition, said U.S.-based Conservation International, which organized the trip along with the Indonesian Institute of Science.

"The giant rat is about five times the size of a typical city rat," said Kristofer Helgen, a scientist with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. "With no fear of humans, it apparently came into the camp several times during the trip."

1. 60 Minutes just did a story on this Sunday.
Impressive footage, if anyone happened to catch it. Not just the mammals, but also lots of new birds of paradise, insects, etc.

7. I saw it
It was fascinating. It also appeared to me as if the tiny possum had no fear of the humans by the way it was climbing all over them.

29. I grew up in NYC...
...and used to see rats that size regularly. They'd climb out of the 8th avenue & 42th street subway, steal the slice of pizza out of your hand, and retreat to the tunnels. Absolutely fearless.

32. Wonderful yet sad
Wonderful that so many wonderful forms of life are on the earth, and sad that they are all in peril.

That little possum is CUTE! Can't say as much for the rat...the frogs were awesome though! Also the finch, such colors! I read that it was just discovered in October.

What a wonderful planet!
