She thought she had indigestion.

Heart attacks in women are completely different from men, symptomatically speaking.

39... damn. Life is way too fragile and far too short.

80. Was she murdered? There is a lot of money at stake from the estate of her ex-husband that his kids
want and don't want her to have....I wouldn't put it past them to get that dirty and desperate.

It makes one wonder...also, even though she has passed away, isn't it possible for her daughter, her heir, to take the case for the inheritance further to trial??

Also, if murder and foul play isn't the cause of death, it is possible that the combination of depression, medication and diet medication could have killed her...

And then there is always death by broken heart...I saw the interviews with her a few months ago following the death of her son and I had a sense that a part of her had died...It's possible that she literally died of a broken heart....

Sadly, her little daughter will now grow up without her brother and mother...And, watch the battle of the "Dads" happen next - ie. who gets custody and ofcourse control of her monies...

What a tragic story...

Anna Nicole Smith died Thursday afternoon after collapsing in her hotel room in Florida, her attorney confirmed to MSNBC.

Smith collapsed in her hotel room at the Hard Rock Cafe and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and was rushed to a hospital on Thursday. A Hollywood, Fla., fire department spokesman told MSNBC TV that the actress was unresponsive when the rescue unit arrived on the scene.

Smith was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital shortly after 2 p.m. EST and was intubated at the scene.

This kind of fast posting is done by the people that are on DU often and post news for all of us, if it's not linked to a story in a short period of time, it's removed. I see nothing wrong with it.

And I will say it in my post, my condolences to her family, what a weird series of events. Money definitely doesn't bring joy all the time. To lose her son, then suffer such heartache and whatever other situations with her body, and to die surely is eye opening.

I hate that this is one of the first things that popped into my mind, but between the estate battle and a possible wrongful death suit against Trim Spa, a lot of lawyers are going to make out like bandits because of this poor, troubled woman.

147. In October 2006, Anna Nicole Smith's mom stated she feared just that...
In October 2006, Anna Nicole Smith's mom, Virgie Arthur, told Nancy Grace on CNN Headline News that after the death of Anna's son, Daniel, she was concerned that Howard K. Stern was the one in line to inherit Anna's millions.

"If Howard Stern marries her and she ends up dead, then who does the money go ? Danny's not there," Arthur said.

Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 04:13 PM by Dr Fate
To the point where we compare today's crap to the icons of the past to justify it.

I am reminded of the current Oscar billboards & bus-stop ads I am seeing- they emphasise Oscar winning movies that are 30 to 70 years old, in the hopes that the positive associations with GOOD movies will will rub off the current focus tested crap.

Marilyn was quite a gifted comic actress; very natural, very sexy and very funny. Anna Nicole Smith was just big, coarse and dumb, IMO. She got way more than her allotted 15 minutes of fame.

241. I agree!
It's a total insult to compare the two. Marilyn was a true Hollywood Movie Star. Anna N never even got past bit parts. She was only a creature of the tabloids and a second tier reality TV personality.

The only thing they DID have in common is their boobs were real, not silicone. Or did Anna N fool me there too?

52. Some insiders claim that Marylin's "dumb blonde" act was just that- an act.
I'm not sure the two are comparable- Marylin left us with iconic images and some entertaining flicks- Anna's output was mostly TV infomericals and bad "reality" TV.

I think we lower our standards when we try to compare mediocre aspects of today's pop-culture with pop-culture that stands the test of time.

I'll say it - I don't give a damn, save for empathy for the surviving family members. Period, end of story! No, I don't look forward to the damn media fixating on her 3rd rate TV show or all the disgusting escapades of her life.

Nope, please spare "all of us" that horror.

I LOVE that line...

someone once told me, "smart people can multi task and focus on multiple issues!" when I once said they were harping on Pelosi too much to deal with smaller issues immediately in her state, it's a great line of argument and I'm thrilled it was used on me when I said, "doesn't she have more important things to do?", but I wasn't heartless like these people are being, with their comments... wow, she's not even at the morgue if you know what I mean, and they're screaming at us for talking about it!

I appreciate that you could be flexible enough to see another point of view, even if you did not change your original opinion (not that I'm saying you should).

I also feel that people ought to make allowances when discussing a death. If one does not want to participate in the celebrity culture (and I understand the position of those who feel that way) then why do so. Even if one is scolding others, one is participating.

244. Yes, because DUers are too stupid to think about several things at once
Seems to be what some people here think. And it's not just the Anna Nicole story, seems like anytime a "non-important" story pops up, there are always some who scream "it's a non-story, pay attention to IRAQ."

I don't know about you, but I find this attitude highly insulting. It suggests that by spending a couple of minutes reading up on some trivial story, that I'm going to suddenly forget about the truly important stories. It suggests that I'm not capable of handling more than a couple of subjects at a time. Thus, the stories occupying my brain had damned well better be the truly important ones.

Do you really think I'm a Kelly Bundy? That by absorbing the Anna Nicole Smith story, I have to get rid of something else to make room for it?

Downright fishy.

Two (reasonably) healthy people under 40 dying within weeks of each other? Very improbable, demographically speaking. It is natural to wonder about suicide, maybe even murder.

On edit - A quick look at a life table shows the probability of a female 39 year old dying within the next year to be .001 (a tenth of a percent), and a 21 year old male to be .00041 (well under a tenth of a percent). Granted, they were related and therefore these aren't necessarily statistically independent events, but still...

Smith, diet drug face class-action lawsuit

Anna Nicole Smith and TrimSpa Inc. have been sued in a class-action lawsuit alleging their marketing of a weight-loss pill is false or misleading.

Janet Luna and three people identified as her guardians were named in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges deceptive business practices and a violation of California's unfair competition law.

They are asking for unspecified damages, restitution and an injunction preventing Smith and New Jersey-based TrimSpa, maker of TrimSpa X32, from making claims that users of the pills can lose substantial amounts of weight.

Smith, 39, has endorsed TrimSpa and is a spokeswoman.

you better get used to hearing about her for MONTHS...

her odd death, along with her son's will be gossip for months, but for now, her death IS late breaking news, many of us are going to talk about it and our thoughts, and if you want to waste your afternoon bitching and moaning with a couple other folks, go right ahead! I won't be watching Nancy Grace or crap like that after today, but for now, it's someone I thought was funny on her show at times, she seemed nice, and she lost her son tragically, so go to a pet store and love on the animals til the fervor over her death goes away from DU, k?

97. Was It Her Husband
I know he is not dead, but did he have anything to do with her death? Smith's mother had warned her daugther about Stern. Are they still going to do the paternity test now that Smith has died? If Stern is not the father he does not get the money. So maybe he decided to knock her off so that it would not come out that he was not the father of the child. So what do others think?

probably didn't. Paternity test for the baby will be performed I'm sure, especially under the current citcumstances. It has been alleged that Smith used methadone, a powerful opiate-based treatment, while pregnant. (nice one for the child!)

215. nothing brings out the weirdos like the death of someone
I am always disgusted seeing some people's reactions. Whether it's Anna Nicole, Steve Irwin, Aaron Spelling or someone else, there are people who truly show their ugly side.

I have a cousin in Baghdad right now, and, at least, three friends in Iraq as well. I am always saddened by the casualties I read every day in the paper. But because I take the time to feel empathy for the death of someone as tragic as ANS, does that make me any less in tune or informed about the war in Iraq? No. It's laughable that some people suggest that. Pretty sick stuff.

on the of allegations of a likely embittered ex-friend.

The drug-use accusations during her pregnancy were never substantiated; in fact, the birth of a healthy, full-term, NON-hospitalized baby seems to fully refute that crap.

164. Shows what you know.
I am not a Anna Nicole fan, but even I know she was not a spoiled rich person. Short Nicole history lesson of you. She was born in a small Texas town. Never knew her father, raised by her mother in poverty. Married at seventeen, had son. Worked in a fried chicken restaurant, sent her picture to Playboy and got accepted as a Playmate. This entered her into the world of modeling and the limelight. She made her own fame, and was probably not as dumb as she acted (who could be?). She married the old rich man, who by the way had a history of marrying/taking as mistresses exoctic dancers, so she was not his first bimbo. The deal she made with him was that if she married him, he would leave her a percentage of his money. So why should she not get it?

On the medical front: son had a heart condition which was part of what killed him along with the drugs. Anna probably also had this heart condition. She was taking Methadone during her pregnancy and her baby supposedly was born addicted. There is more that I have learned in the last five minutes, but I am tired of typing.

on a human level, of course her death is a loss in some way. but as a cultural icon, i think what is coming out on this board is a frustration with who we collectively choose as out icons.

how much grief would be expressed here if it were Limbaugh? for many of us, ANS was equally vapid and irrelevent, albeit slightly less annoying.

Did Anna's Mom See This Coming?
Posted Feb 8th 2007 4:36PM by TMZ Staff

In October 2006, Anna Nicole Smith's mom, Virgie Arthur, told Nancy Grace on CNN Headline News that after the death of Anna's son, Daniel, she was concerned that Howard K. Stern was the one in line to inherit Anna's millions.

"If Howard Stern marries her and she ends up dead, then who does the money go ? Danny's not there," Arthur said.

178. No marriage necessary

If the child is his, then he will be the most likely candidate to manage the estate in trust for the child.

It is unusual for someone's attorney to be the apparent father of a client's child. It is odder still for that attorney to be present when the only other child of that client drops dead, and then several months later the client also dies.

Mr. Stern has certainly seen some high odds move in his favor.

144. Sad! Candle in theWind' Marilyn Monroe lookalike dies!
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you ...

I couldn't help but want to like her. I enjoyed her show sometimes, but the fact is, her heartbreaking loss of her son made me feel HUMAN compassion for her, as money is never a ticket for JOY, and secondly, she did appear before the Supreme Court and have this tidbit printed around the world -

"Actress and model Anna Nicole Smith can add another line to her colorful resume: a winner in the U.S. Supreme Court"

how many can say THAT!

my last post here about this, RIP, and bless you all in your own HEALTH and JOY... we all have heartbreak and loss, may we all remember to comfort one another and think of others!

205. Whats interesting about Anna Nicole is she seemed like a strong woman.
She kept making choices I thought were terrible, but still she seemed a lot stronger than Marilyn Monroe.

She is someone who fought to get where she was. She fought terrible public opinion when she married the old guy and then she continuted to fight it through the law suits, about her weight, etc. Sure she was using him but she still held her head high.

She had the guts to be 60 lbs overweight and wear a sexy gown. She even did it when she was 80 lbs over. How many other women will?

She became what she wanted to be. That I respect her for.

 Her mother warned to be careful, she may be next. Her highly publicized marriage to oil business executive and billionaire J. Howard Marshall, who was 63 years her senior, resulted in tumultuous speculation that she married the octogenarian merely for his money, which she denied. Following his death, she began a lengthy and ongoing legal battle over a share of his estate. Her case, Marshall v. Marshall, reached the U.S. Supreme Court in February 2006 on a technical question of federal jurisdiction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Nicole_Smith While growing up, Vickie told others she wanted to be the next Marilyn Monroe. Edited to ad; On June 20, 2006, E. Pierce Marshall died at age 67 after an infection. I am worried about the baby. IMO,the baby should be given a health evaluation immediately!

181. Not a fan, but still sad.
It's just a little depressing to see people badmouthing the death of someone. I prefer the origional Marilym myself, but each death is a tragedy. Maybe... not as stupidly unneccesary as all the deaths in Iraq, and maybe it is a fluff story put on by station managers whose bosses don't want them showing death tolls and desperate for other news, but it s still saddening.

Maybe Smith was a bit of a boor, maybe she was too deep into the Reality/celebrity TV mess, maybe her 15 minutes of fame should have expired long ago, but I can't answer any of that. All I see is a kid who'll only have the faintest memories of their mother and having to live in the shadow of lots of rich men fighting over what is rightfully their money.

So Please, mourn your soldiers, but do not immediately put down someone you do not know personally.

200. not comparable to Marilyn Monroe.
MM had some brains that she hid. She knew that the "dumb blonde" part was an act. She was reading philosophy to attempt to keep up with her last husband, Arthur Miller.

I saw Anna Nicole Smith at the family law courthouse in Houston during the probate fight. She was skinny then. What struck me was that the woman is HUGE. She was probably six feet tall, and as tall as her attorneys, in her spike heels. Like six foot two ro three.

She was a high school drop out in Mexia, Texas, worked at the Dairy Queen, and had nothing going for her but her looks if she was made up properly. She was boorish and grumpy. I doubt if she was blessed with good judgment or intelligence. So she went to Houston and became a stripper. One of Mr. Marshall's sons was legitimate and the other one was an illegitimate child of a stripper popularly known as "Lady Walker". So the rich oilman had a thing about strippers.

When she was on the stand in the probate case, being cross examined by Rusty Hardin, she got mad at him and said "Fuck you, Rusty!" on the stand.
This probably impressed the jury greatly, but not favorably. The probate judge probably wasn't impressed either. I heard from one of my lawyer friends that for several months that Mr. Hardin was greeted by his friends on the street with "Fuck you, Rusty!" as a joke.

The woman had ambition and drive and nothing going for her but looks. She got out of redneck hell in Mexia and married money. In spite of her coarseness, I am still sorry for her and her motherless daughter.

BTW, Mexia is pronounced May-hair or Meh-HEY-ya. NOT MEX-EE-uh.

203. Spooky connections to Sibel Edmonds!...

First:

Check out the title image for this film:

http://www.fravidis.com/fiche.php?P=1070&G=48

and the title image for this film that we still have yet to see here in the states:

Note the common similarity here?

"Une femme a abattre" which translated from babelfish means "a woman has to cut down" or as Sibel Edmonds' film title reads "Kill the Messenger".

Kind of ironic, eh?

Second:

Both Sibel Edmonds and Anna Nicole Smith appealed to the Supreme Court in 2005. Guess who got their case heard!

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/artsentertainment/2002524385_websupremecourtanna27.html

Sibel, stay safe and don't fly in any planes today!

Losing a kid just a few months ago...that must have been tough...

Kinda proves that all the money in the world can still leave you depressed, fucked up, and completely miserable.

I don't view her as very iconic, though to some extent, maybe she does symbolize the shallowness of pop culture in the nineties, but I don't view her as polarizing either.

212. My guess, multiple drug combo
... will be the cause of death. She wasn't in the best health in the first place. She was hospitalized for pneumonia shortly after her daughter's birth (and her son's death). She was probably taking anti-depressants. She'd been having flu like symptoms, so she was probably taking prescription and/or OTC cold/flu medication. The ephedrine in cold/flu meds can interact dangerously with dozens of other medications. It's in some formulations of TrimSpa too.

RIP, Vickie Lynn.

214. Give me a break!
With all due respect, this woman's demise deserves a footnote, not a major news story and not a couple of hundred posts on DU. I watched the local news tonight and it was full of this fake buxom, twisted woman...the next subject was about female soldier killed in Iraq. The soldier got second billing. I am sorry that anyone dies so young and especially a mother and I sympathize with this poor woman and the death of her son but I think the attention and emotion that this has gotten is sick. From what I can gather, her life has been very sad and chaotic but it seems that she fully participated in that. Dear God, folks, there are much more important things to talk about these days!

216. there was a woman who couldn't find happiness
She went from having nothing to having everything. She battled body image problems, constant media ridicule and became a reality show spectacle. Her son died young too. Lots of tragedy in her life. For some people she's emblematic about all that is wrong in our sensationalistic, celebrity driven culture, sure, but she was a human being who had valid problems that were put under a microscope in a way that none of us could ever relate with. I hope she's found peace and I hope her young child is taken care of and has a good life. RIP.

224. but think about this
How many people on this thread have been reporting about troop's deaths for four years? How many have lived and fought and opposed the Iraq war even before it was waged and one single troop was maimed or killed? At least 4 years of fighting, is nothing compared to the few minutes that most of us will spend on this thread.

Or maybe you could comment on other far more important issues, rather than commenting on somebody who is reporting something that you deem unimportant? Because, as I see it, all the people in their purity over "important issues" seem to find time to comment on somebody else's comments on a topic they supposedly have no interest in. So if it's beneath you, I guess I'm wondering why you chose to click on the thread in the first place?

226. A billionaire, a baby, and two boyfriends.
So, a five month old infant girl of ANSmith inherits (presumably, per the Supreme Court of the USA) half a billion dollars "originally" from an old man who died a decade before she was conceived, and she is no relation to him.

And her mother married her father, HK Stern (presumably, unless the ceremony was just a fraud). Her half brother is dead under similar-looking circumstances.

So, the speculation is: what if HKStern killed ANS's adult son and then off'ed her? He'd be in charge of his daughter's legacy from her mother.

At this point, I hope the estate isn't collected and the other boyfriend ends up being the father.

236. I enjoyed Anna Nicole and feel very sad that she is dead.
I didn't think I would like her until I saw her reality show. She was fascinating in a mixed up, tragicomedy way. She came up from nowhere, USA and through shear will and determination became a celebrity. I felt very sorry for her when her son died. She wasn't coping with it well at all, that much was obvious.

I really wonder what Howard Stern was up to with her, whether he loved her or was in it for the money.

I hope that baby ends up with the right parent.

243. St. Louis conservative talk show host calls her a whore just hours after her death
Conservative talk show host and Sean Hannity wannabe showed his compassionate conservativism today by calling Anna Nicole Smith a "whore" and said she "sat on a corpse" to win the heart (and money) of her millionaire ex husband. Then he goes on to bash other groups (overweight people, homosexuals) in the same hour.

252. Breaking news: Young woman meets sudden, tragic death
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 09:01 AM by ama
there were many things that this woman, so deserving of our undivided attention tonight, did not do. No, she didn't take off her clothes for a men's magazine for a big payday, work as "an exotic dancer" or marry a billionaire customer who was 63 years older than her. Nor did she spend most of her adult life pursuing that billionaire's estate in courtrooms from Texas to Washington, D.C., or record her life for a reality TV show, or abuse drugs, or give birth to a child whose paternity is the focus of a legal battle.

Frankly, we feel silly for even writing those things, because such a woman would clearly not be newsworthy.

No, unlike some women you might see on your newsstand this week, this woman liked simple things: According to one report, she "always enjoyed the water, including boating and scuba diving. She also liked yoga and music and spending time with family and friends."

This is what her aunt says about this unique woman that America mourns tonight:

"If you knew her, you loved her. She was a go-getter. She knew what she wanted in life and she was doing what she had to do to achieve that."
Her name is Jennifer M. Parcell. She was just 20 years old, and she graduated in 2004 from Fallston High School near her hometown, Bel Air, Md.

A couple of years ago, Jennifer Parcell went to Parris Island and watched the Marine graduation services for her older brother, Joseph. She decided that she, too, wanted to join the Marines, and eventually both Jennifer Parcell and her brother were sent to Iraq, even serving at the same post for a time.

But then, they separated. Yesterday, Jennifer Parcell was supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province when she was killed in action
http://www.attytood.com/2007/02/breaking_news_young_woman_meet.html
and thats the death America should be mourning
