NORTHCOM Prepares for Possible Pandemic

NORTHCOM Prepares for Possible Pandemic

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo., Feb. 1, 2006 – U.S. Northern Command recently hosted representatives from more than 40 international, federal and state agencies for an exercise designed to provoke discussion and determine what governmental actions, including military support, would be necessary in the event of an influenza pandemic in the United States.

"We're building the knowledge base, trying to get ahead of the curve now as much as we can," said Gene Pino, director of NORTHCOM's training and exercise directorate. "We're here to explore (and) identify issues, identify challenges and identify concerns from each of our particular perspectives."

Exercise attendees analyzed topics such as public health care, maintaining civil order and providing continuity of government and private operations in case of widespread infection and worker absenteeism.

"NORTHCOM will not be running the show in the event of a pandemic," said Dave Wilkins, the NORTHCOM exercise facilitator. "We will be taking guidance and requests from other agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, via the secretary of defense."

4. My brother in law said something about reading
that Haliburton was getting a contract for building detention camps along the southern US border. Something to do with a fear that huge numbers of migrants or refugees might try to cross the border. (But I am unaware of any unusual situation in Mexico or elsewhere south of the border. As it is, 9% of the Mexican population is already here. Bienvenidos!)

9. I saw that too. I agree. The immigration arguement is a ruse.
Those detention centers are for you and me.

13. Yes, Bush is getting ready to play the 'bioterror card.' The pharma-
terrorists have been working on resurrecting the 1918 bird flu pandemic for quite a while.
Bush doesn't need Osama bin Laden this time: he can claim he still 'kept America safe,' but yet invoke a full-blown police state, as the pandemic would 'not be his fault.'

BTW, here is the thread w. the link on KBR's American detention centers:

12. I don't think what's coming will be contained within US borders.
It will be global. My estimate, 75 to 90 % of current global population gone within the next 20 to 50 years. I do not intend to survive it. In two to three generations, it will be a whole new world. The tribulations of the 20th and 21st centuries will be 'ancient' history.

14. I think your right...meanwhile, I'm home sick in bed right now fighting
something dreadful...I figure maybe if I get enough flu bugs, I'll be ready for the "pandemic" when it comes, and since I'm still breastfeeding, my kids will be protected too...

Ugh...things are going to be getting so ugly...I feel it...between the economic collapse coming, the "pandemic", the global climate change and many natural disasters, and don't forget the coming (no, here already) police state, I'd say things are going to be a whole lot worse....

:hi: Beam Me Up! Can't blame you for not wanting to survive it....

15. So sorry you've got a flu!
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 01:56 AM by Beam Me Up
I've managed to stave off any illness this winter. Have come close three times but with strong echnacia and vitamin C have come through just fine. Hope you feel better soon!

As far as surviving, its not so much a matter of not wanting to -- I suspect most of us won't whether we want to or not. Then again, I've been anticipating the end of the world since I was a little kid so maybe I'm just as much wrong now as I've always been! Most people think I'd have to be terribly depressed--which I'm not at all. I know the world is mad--and always has been in various ways although I think it is worse now than ever. ON THE OTHER HAND, I know what is important and that isn't physical survival but the survival of the little germ of goodness and humanity that we all carry.

:hi:

17. I had the 1968 Hong Kong pandemic flu, and I was the sickest that
I've ever been. If the next one of these things is worse, a lot of people will be severely incapacitated for 2 to 3 weeks at least.

In my little town, 20-40% of the kids seemed to be out of school at any one time, and the streets were really quiet. The wave passed after about 6 weeks, and things returned to normal.

I don't recall that we lacked any necessary supplies, or that the hospital was completely overloaded. Of course, back then, most businesses had supplies on hand or in close-by warehouses. There was none of this "just in time" supply chain.

Frankly, I'd be happy to know that civilians, maybe in conjunction with local law enforcement and maybe the national guard, were putting together some plans that included setting up makeshift non-acute hospitals in public buildings so that those living alone could receive care, or organizing well folks to drop off food and supplies at the residences of the sick, etc.

However, I'm not happy with Northcom getting involved after what happened in New Orleans, and NO MERCENARIES.

Perhaps we'll get lucky and any pandemic holds off until a Democrat is in office and more Democrats are holding governorships.

19. Why NorthCom and not the US Surgeon General function????
Placing the Rumsfelds in charge of a "MEDICAL," disaster is liking bringing the cannons to stage a Democracy.
