(52,202 posts)and ironically it might well be with contemporaries of them in terms of age that this issue is the most pressing. To me, age is a very individual thing. I look at Tony Bennett, who is still touring in his 80's. Barry Manilow doing so in his mid 70's. Shirley McClain who is still dancing marvelously in her 80's and don't forget Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, Martin Sheen, and Sam Waterston who are marvelous on Netflix in their 70's. That said, I also think of my own parents both of whom are dead (mom at 62 dad at 77) and can't help to wonder just how able they would be to keep that kind of schedule. Both of them appear to be in great health, both seem to have taken care of themselves (neither smoke, neither drink to excess, neither seem to over eat etc) but anyone in their late 40's and beyond personally know people who looked great and then didn't really fast at the ages both of them are. A younger, capable VP nominee would be a must for either one (Palin was all the more troubling given McCain was a 73 year old cancer survivor).
