Republican fiction writers [View all]

Another editorial I got published recently..

Republican fantasy writers are at it again and it's hard to say if their latest work should be classified as horror, comedy, fantasy or a bit of each. Readers will recall similar Republican works dealing with WMDs in Iraq, denial of global warming, the benefits of Wall Street deregulation and why the richest few need even more money.

The current plot has Republicans rushing to stop socialism and class warfare from taking root in America. Socialism being uniquely defined by them as any kind of regulation that in any way shape or form cuts into corporate profits while class warfare means asking millionaires to pay a bit more in taxes. It portrays the “99 Percent Occupiers” as people who have just too much time on their hands and who should “get a job.” One will recall the same suggestion made against those demonstrating against segregation and against the Vietnam War back in the 60s. And you can't help wondering why similar advice was not given to TEA party demonstrators.

The latest story is full of comic twists and turns like the story's heroes charging that protecting corporate profits, eliminating minimum wage and killing Medicare are actually what is best for the little guy and then slamming Democrats for failing to correct the economic disaster, they, the Republicans, created.

It's great fiction filled with elements that make you shake with fear or laughter depending on which day of the week it is told and who tells it.

The story makes perfect sense, however, to loyal Republican readers than the alternate story that the powerful moneyed interests are willing to say or do anything to prevent even a single oat being taken from their feedbags.

The jury is out as to whether or not this latest work will make it to the all-time best seller list, but it is a fact that good fantasy requires a voluntary suspension of critical thinking, and that is something the intended audience has repeatedly shown itself more than willing to do.
