Rand Paul Slams Ashley Judd, Embraces Tiresome GOP Misogyny
The GOP has a very limited playbook when dealing with rivals. Generally speaking, if theyre not white or male, the GOP attacks their intelligence and fairly drips condescension. For someone as pre-programmed and unoriginal as Rand Paul (R-Parrot), there was never any danger of straying for this playbook and it showed during a Sunday interview on CNN. When the topic of Ashley Judds challenge to deeply unpopular Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-No One Likes Me) came up, Paul had this to say:
Ashley Judd is a famous actress, shes an attractive woman and presents herself well and from what I understand is articulate.
He might as well have added, You know, for a chick.
This is a perfect example of how conservatives view female politicians. Sarah Palin was a huge hit because she was attractive and, when she had a teleprompter, great at delivering a speech. That she was poorly educated and mangled the English language the rest of the time was irrelevant. She looked great doing it. So of course this is what Paul takes note of first and only afterwards disparages Judds intelligence by referring to her as articulate.
Articulate is the right wing code word for not as stupid as the rest. It is rare that a white male politician is referred to as articulate because its assumed that they already are. Its a poorly kept secret that Republicans already think women are too stupid to make decisions for themselves. This is reflected in the GOPs ongoing war on womens rights which are almost always waged by older men because having a uterus obviously disqualifies a person from discussing one. We also find this reflected in the distaste the right has for women voters.
