It's believed that Bush arranged for Woodward (Navy intel man officer planted at WaPost) to be fed the story on Watergate so PTB could rid itself of Nixon sooner rather than later. Nixon wasn't as keen on global fascism as Bush and his cronies.

Remember: Woodward pushed the idea of IranContra and BCCI as non-stories, and unworthy of pursuit.
