2016 Postmortem
In reply to the discussion: Bill Clinton was speaking to middle-aged white guys like me, that's why Rachel doesn't get it [View all]Upthevibe
(8,075 posts)65. I noticed as soon as Rachel and Brian came on that she was in a horrible mood. I kept
wondering what the heck was wrong. And I too was really thrown when she said what she said after the speech. His speech was exactly what it needed to be. Rachel even said he mainly talked about himself!! WTF?? He talked about Hillary and all she's done.
When people meet at that age, they do refer to each other as girls and boys. And, I remember when President Obama was running and Michelle was talking about when they first started dating....how his shoes had holes in the bottom of them. It was completely endearing as was President Clinton's speech was tonight. Rachel -DEAD WRONG!

This. If Hillary was telling the same story, she would have said 'This boy wouldn't stop trying to..

When I was in my early 20's, I was still referring to women my age as "girls"

Well I beg to differ slightly. My sons are 28 and 30 and they still say, "I met a girl"

Utter nonsense. Bill spent much time relating to the achievements of women like his wife.

I'm sorry you disagree.... but Rachel is completely tone-deaf about this speech and its impact

I'm not sure that posters on this thread understand that Rachel was discretely describing that

Which I disagree with her even going there, those two are STILL together. Chuck Todd pointed that

She wasn't "discretely describing." She was deliberately trying to paint a negative picture

The vast majority of reactions I've seen have been positive. Few people other than you and Rachel

And he also referred to himself as a boy. So Rachel was just looking for something

It wasn't lost on me that he was directing his remarks to white men. Strategically it's brilliant...

I think you have to be an older woman to appreciate what "girl" means and when it is bad.
