War on Christmas? [View all]
We hear so much lately about the War on Christmas. Every year it gets more heated. This year, my memories wandered back to the time when I was in grade school (a long time ago).
I went to a grade school where at least half of the students were Jewish, because so many of them lived in the same neighborhood. And I remember that at this time of year, there was always the obligatory Christmas pageants and concerts at school.
I have to give so much credit to those Jewish students who took part in all the festivities without complaint. To be honest, I didn't even know that they did not celebrate Christmas in the beginning. Once I learned that they did not believe the way that I was raised to believe, I was amazed at the way that they tolerated all of this.
These festivities are no longer in the public schools, and it is a good thing. The Jewish students, as well as any students of any other religions, should not have been forced participate in one religion's celebration. Of course, this is the reason that Christians are so upset that they have proclaimed that there is a War on Christmas.
No. There is no war on Christmas. In fact, for most of my life, and prior to that, there has been a war on people who do not celebrate Christmas. These Jewish families had the grace to deal with a war against them and their beliefs without making a stink about it. Yet, now that we are recognizing that it was unfair to other faiths to force them to celebrate with Christians, the Christians are making a big deal about it.
I find it very selfish on the part of Christians. They have had their way for so long and are so self-absorbed that they have the audacity to call this a War of Christmas. Shame on them.
