(2,112 posts)My theory on that is as a reaction to the increasing militarization of the police force in general. Many if not most police officers treat the public with utter contempt. Some extremely minor offenses, which in the not too distant past would have earned the violator at most a ticket now result in arrest, towing of a vehicle, being held in a cell for a day or so, extreme fines, and frequently the use of a Taser. The public is frankly getting sick of this shit.
Actual criminals see an even more severe side. They are, in my opinion, justifiably very concerned about the treatment they will face over a minor crime. Can't say as I blame them for deciding to shoot it out.
Last but not least, cops are much more inclined to use less-than-lethal or lethal force, in many cases, forcing the suspect to defend himself when it could have easily been a relatively conflict-free encounter.
