Israel accepts truce plan; Hamas balks [View all]

GAZA CITY — Israel on Tuesday accepted an Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire with Hamas in Gaza after a week of non-stop fire, but the Islamist militant group rejected the deal, saying it had not been consulted on its terms.

A senior Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhri, called the proposal “unacceptable” and complained that Egyptians have not spoken with the Gaza leadership. The group’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigade, wrote on its Web site that the initiative was “not worth the ink it was written with” and “the resistance will continue until all the demands of our people are met.”

Israel reported several rockets launched over southern Israel just after 10 a.m. Sirens were going off in southern Israeli communities and in Sderot, indicating more rocket fire. A salvo of five rockets were seen launching from the center of Gaza at 11:15 a.m. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said the Israeli military was holding fire at the direction of the government, but will respond if Hamas and its allies continue to launch rockets.

In a televised press conference together with the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning, Netanyahu said that “If Hamas rejects the Egyptian proposal and the rocket fire continues, which it looks like it does at the moment, then we are prepared to continue and intensify the operation against Hamas and we will get the support from the members of the international community.”

For days there have been non-stop complaining about Palestinian casualties. So where are the cries from pro-Palestinians NOW for Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel so all this can end?

Why the silence? Shouldn't there be worldwide outcry calling on Hamas to end their senseless and counterproductive attacks? If all these people who purport to care for Palestinians actually cared, they'd be begging Hamas to stop.

Where are they?

Hamas is demanding to be REWARDED for starting a war and getting Palestinians killed. Fozzledick Jul 2014 #14

Ending the siege without a real peace settlement would just lead to more rocket attacks. Fozzledick Jul 2014 #16
would it now? again has keeping the siege intact lead to peace? n/t azurnoir Jul 2014 #17
It's led to a reduction in Hamas' offensive capabilities. Fozzledick Jul 2014 #18
