(13,874 posts)In 1984 poor old doomed Walter Mondale ventured down from Minnesota to South Carolina during the campaign (SC had voted for Carter in 1976, so it wasn't a totally futile effort).
In the coastal town of Beaufort he attended a fundraiser that had a shrimp boil. Boiled (usually pronounced more like 'bald') shrimp take a little bit of effort to remove the shell and dip in sauce before eating.
Mondale had his second shrimp in his hand but seemed reluctant to eat it because he was still chewing the first one. That was when he commented "they sure are crunchy" and we realized he had not removed the shell.
He should have taken a lesson from Strom Thurmond. I (twice) saw Thurmond at events that had boiled shrimp and he would ask some young intern to peel him some. After they had about 40-50 in a pile he would eat a couple, fold the rest in a napkin and put it in his pocket saying, "I'll take these home to Nancy." We could all imagine how, 4 or 5 days later, the smell would send someone to check his coat pocket in the closet.
