it's related to Daredevil and Jessica Jones in that they all take place in the same section of NYC - Hell's Kitchen. When the DD comic started back in the 60s, Hell's Kitchen was kind of a seedy and not very nice area. That's how they're playing it on the show, even though it's taking place in current times.

In current times IRL, Hell's Kitchen is now a gentrified area of the city and pretty wealthy.

It's a lot more down to earth than the superhero movies (Iron Man, Thor, Avengers, etc) in that they're battling to save local people from crime lords, and not engaging in epic battles to save the world.
