How to tell if your elk call is effective: [View all]

An elk hunter was hurt last week when he was bitten by a grizzly bear
while hunting in the Madison Range.

According to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, a Pennsylvania
man and his wife were bow-hunting off Indian Creek Trail in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge
National Forest when the encounter happened Friday morning.

About 8:30 a.m., the man was concealed in the brush about 25 yards away from his wife.
While using his elk call, the man heard a rustling nearby and looked up to see a
female grizzly staring at him from about 15 yards away.

"This guy was in pretty thick brush, and he was making an elk sound," Frey said.
"The bear just didn't pick up that it was a human."
