(3,032 posts)37. I could never understand how stuff like this happens. Just hit the damn breaks?
Modern cars have breaks that can lock up the wheels (until the ABS kicks in) at any speed. Even with the gas pedal floored it must be possible to make the car slow down using the breaks, unless the master pump fails.
Also, it came to a stop after she was advised to "pull the accelerator and break at the same time". She never thought of that during 35 minutes of driving like that?
This is just weird.

So much of it is computer controlled now, you really aren't in control most of the time.

Yep! Last time I tried to use an emergency brake for a true emergency the cable broke. One is

I always ask them to check the tension on it when I get a car serviced - saved me once.
