...in the Arc of Republican Poverty aren't as stupid as their constituents. Well, maybe except for Perry.

"I don’t think that’s a valid option for Tennessee," said Tennesee Gov. Bill Haslam. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley released a long statement through a spokeswoman in which he reiterated his belief in "one nation under God" and that "states can be great laboratories of change."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry also threw a wet blanket on the secession petition plan, saying that he "believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it."

Those guys work with budgets every day, and they know goddamn well their states would utterly collapse if they didn't have federal transfer money coming in. The money that the blue states are taxed, and willingly give to them as part of the Union's sacred compact.

Which they spit on in hypocrisy, as they have for over 150 years.

Is there an answer? I don't know. Sometimes I wonder if maybe Lincoln made the wrong choice - but I never fail to pray that Obama is not forced to re-visit that matter in extremis.
