In reply to the discussion: George Zimmerman Lawyers: 'Withdrawing As Counsel; Lost Contact With Him' [View all]JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)I was thinking today that he has to either exonerate himself and clear his name or serve time because he will be a pariah if he doesn't. He either has to prove that he acted in self-defense or face the jury without that defense. He is really in a tough place. The police did him no service when they failed to charge him under these circumstances.
A guy who is surrounded by a team of men with guns and who shoots his way out of that situation (unlikely scenario but . . .) might be able to avoid a trial under the SYG law, seems to me, but Zimmerman's situation was too unclear. Even Jeb Bush, it is claimed, said that SYG does not apply under these facts. Well, we don't really know all the facts, but a trial is appropriate in my opinion. And not necessarily for some sort of vengeance. This situation needs to be clarified. The facts need to be established.
And the law needs to be assessed for its practicality and judicial feasibility in part based on this case (not entirely).
Anyway, that is my personal opinion for what it's worth.
