They were using real bullets then because they were in a firefight.
There was potential national security information to be had by keeping him alive. Ultimately, there was not, but that was good thing to know, too. That doesn't mean their motives were or were not altruistic. I don't mean to argue that. Value was to be had by getting answers from him. To that end, they were purposefully successful.
I do agree, we are not privy to all the details. It's hard to criticize the outcome.
