(3,427 posts)I'd be open to certain changes such as raising the payroll tax cap or requiring retirees with high net worth to pay a little more into Medicare. But if he's talking about chained CPI or other benefit cuts, that's going to anger a lot of people who voted for him.
In defense of the President, I don't think he will propose reducing the deficit ONLY though Social Security and Medicare changes. He will likely demand elimination of tax loopholes for the wealthy and corporations as part of any Grand Bargain -- which Republicans will almost certainly reject.
The Republicans created most of the deficit with tax cuts, unfunded wars, an unfunded prescription drug program, expansion of military spending, and the financial meltdown. Now they want us to fix it by giving up the benefits we have paid for? Sorry, no deal.
