The Twin Cities and much of the rest of Minnesota are getting this winter's first dose of dangerously cold weather, with wicked windchill readings greeting those brave enough to venture out Monday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has a windchill warning in effect for the metro area until noon Monday, a day when the high -- now there's a misnomer -- is expected to be around minus-5 degrees. Combined with winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour, it will feel more like 24 to 34 below zero.
The Weather Service warning includes cautionary language about frostbite to exposed skin and risks of hypothermia.
The silver lining is that many kids and adults have the day off from school or work Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday.
