4. Well, "Holiday" is more inclusive...

I believe the tree was actually in some way a part of the ancient (and perhaps even modern) pagan celebration of the winter solstice - correct me if I'm wrong. So technically it belonged to them first. It's possible that that ritual was carried over from yet another religion some time in the even more distant past.

I've just never really carried what word people use to describe the most annoying day of the year.
