But sometimes there is an unspoken (or loudly proclaimed) cultural, racial, and economic gulf between Detroit and its suburbs.

As if an iron curtain had descended along the median strip of Eight Mile Road (dividing Detroit from Southfield and other suburbs).

It is a most unfortunate situation that contributes to Detroit's seeming inability to pull itself up, to be more like Chicago, Cleveland or Pittsburgh.
