This is one election they couldn't 'fix'. It's been my understanding that the US always favored the other candidate, Ahmed Shafik. He was a crony of Mubarak.
For a while, it looked like Shafik was going to win.
But -- the crowds started to gather again on Tahrir Square.
Ultimately Morsi won the election.

I think they concluded if they let Shafik win, it was going be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The US = expert at close elections.
