You go to bed and there is no snow.

You wake up and there is snow.

You have circumstantial evidence that it snowed last night!

Direct evidence is if you woke up and saw it snowing!

So, if they can't talk about what they know because it is classified, then we can still figure out what happened in the middle of the night!
