(51,087 posts)knows that Twitler called all Mexican immigrants rapists, and all immigrants generally criminals. He knows that Twitler's method was generally to stir up hate.
If he truly cared about bringing back jobs, he would have looked to see who was actually going to bring back jobs and not taken the word of someone who was obviously blowing smoke up his ass.
Again, I don't see "just uninformed" in your description of this man. I see someone who was, consciously or not, so entranced by the racist and sexist message that he was willing to overlook the obvious ridiculousness of the promises. It was those ridiculous promises, after all, that provided cover and allowed him to claim that those promises, and not his racism and sexism, were what motivated his vote.
That racism and sexism, it is true, is sometimes well hidden. That is what the Democrats' mistake was: not understanding the depth and breadth of the disdain and fear that a certain segment of our society holds toward all other segments of our society.
The important thing going forward is that we recognize that disdain and fear, and that we acknowledge its pervasiveness, and we are not fooled by it again.
