And welcome to DU! Your post carries the weight of one who has been there and done that. I graduated H.S. in 75, too late for the war. My older brother was there 67 - 68, and the guys I hung out with were a little older and most of them were vets. They also were by and large anti-authoritarian, and democratic activist union members. (Steel mill town.).
We were the "dirty hippies" the Reaganites pointed at - the uniform was an Army jacket, jeans, and long hair. The guys like you who were there got to see through the "Bright Shining Lie" and weren't going to fall for the bullshit anymore.
Your post stands on it's own. I'm going to shut up now, and look forward to seeing your posts!
