Shit, Surya, my husband and I were talking about this, a few minutes ago. He recalled growing up in a white-bread community where, I'm not kidding, the city ordinance there mandated that all blacks needed to be out of town by 6pm. My husband said he always assumed that by the time he was 50, that would all have ended. That we'd have grown up and evolved and moved beyond all that. He's 67 now. I commented that I thought that would have been the result after the election of Barack Obama as President. That this surely marked a turning of the page, that this was proof we had grown up and gotten over it and put this shit behind us and moved beyond all that. Yeah, MAN was I wrong, too. I was SO HAPPY that night. I just knew this meant we'd finally closed a sordid and miserable and shameful chapter in our history. That was SO OVER. We grew up and knew better than that, and BECAME better than that. We'd FINALLY gotten over it and put that shit down, for good.
