started by talking about his family, and thanking his staff and thanking his supporters
then actually went OWS. That is one reason people say they support him - he cannot be bought. It's a dumb reason, but he is running with it. Railing against the special interests. That's a page out of Sanders, although it is a card that every rich person buying himself public office will play.
I don't buy it, but the fact is that not all of those people are bad - FDR, Mark Dayton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Jack Kennedy, Robert Kennedy.
Anyway, then he gives a plug to Bernie (not dumb, because he knows he wants to run against Bernie) but also takes a swipe at him.
Then think of the points he covers, some of them standard for Republicans
strong defense
take care of veterans
secure borders
stop drugs
protect guns
create jobs
love our country
Considering that he is not reading a pre-written speech (although he could have memorized it, perhaps) or off a teleprompter, I actually think it was pretty impressive. Better than most people could do off the cuff. He hit a whole lot of the bases. He even threw in some praise for the Republican Party and his opponents. "They are awesome guys, but I am gonna go after them tomorrow"
He said a lot of things that a lot of Americans, and especially a lot of Republicans would agree with. For example, there are plenty of people who scoff at the "official" unemployment rate. For another example, many people over 40 are gonna be nostalgic about the past and ready to embrace a slogan like "make America great again".
What is our answer to that? "no, we want America to suck".
In a sense he is promising hope and change with the nostalgia hook into a supposedly glorious past.
