In reply to the discussion: Fired babysitter leaves toddler on street, naked, cigarette burned, head shaved [View all]PatrickforO
(14,578 posts)How could a young lady who seemingly has everything going for her do THIS? That she has the idea that if you're fired from a sitter position, you can go and kidnap the child, burn them with cigarettes, shave their head and leave them naked in the cold to somehow get back at her parents shows this young woman is a sociopath who is profoundly self-centered and incapable of experiencing any kind of empathy for anyone else. It is a lower plane of existence for sure and she needs to be institutionalized because there's no cure for sociopathy and she'll do this kind of thing again.
Abigail Hannah is being held without bail, so that's good, and she will probably be pressured to plea bargain to save the state from an expensive trial, but she'll still do some years behind bars. I'm equally sure her family is paying for the best attorney they can afford and that might be a pretty good one. Also Abigail is good looking and the 2-year-old lived, so it might not be that many years.

That said, another stream of thought showed up in this post. This stream of thought asks the question, legitimately I believe, how things would be for this defendant if she were a person of color. And that's true, because the news is filled with stories of black kids who weren't doing anything wrong, but fell into the hands of cops and 'mysteriously' died. How would it be, then, for a person of color who is accused of something heinous like this?
Would things go tougher on her? Would she survive until the trial? Or would the plea bargain she was forced into be more severe?
Statistically, people of color tend to be sentenced more severely than white people for the same crimes.
Though some were dismissive of this train of thought, these are legitimate questions whether or not you believe they belong in this post. At least I believe so, because I think institutional racism should be something we're all aware of at all times.
