(11,833 posts)I think a President has to balance competing interests and determine which battles are worth fighting and which may be used for compromising. Regarding drilling in the Arctic, the competing interest is for our country to establish good paying jobs and for us to become less energy dependent on other countries. Regarding the TPP, it's an interest to develop trade deals that will provide our country with more revenue and strengthen the job market. Maybe not with union jobs, but with other jobs, along with strengthening working conditions and environmental regulations among our partners overseas.
I'm still not in favor of either of those two things. For me, the environmental concerns outweigh allowing Shell to drill in the Arctic. Regarding the TPP I'm against it until I've read it. But I try and understand the competing interests involved.
