he didn't troll his opinions any better, even after given the opportunity.

This reads more like doubling down with the aide of Merriam Webster than backing off (especially when he was given the opportunity to do so).

You are right - now he is free as a bird to say anything he wants about anyone he wants, and good riddance to him.
