For such complicated tax returns, it is not uncommon at all to file for an extension. Frankly after looking at the returns from 2010 on his website, I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't file an extension for 2011. For 2011, they paid slightly more than what's estimated as due, which is also what I'd expect.
(FWIW, I'm a semi-retired tax attorney.)
