(4,412 posts)Really tough growing-up especially with my sister. Once I was old enough to leave, I got the hell out of Dodge. I stayed away for 20 years. Now my sister is much improved as bi-polar is so much better understood now. Unfortunately schizophrenia is still a toughie and my brother doesn't always medicate. He has a son with severe problems too that my mother is raising. We now have better support systems like the Alliance for the Mentally Ill. I read the Elliott Rodgers bio and the main thing that I was aware of was that he had such poor coping skills. Maybe a lot of parents and people don't realize that those problems only intensify as kids like my sister and brother get older. Especially once they are out on their own without a support system near by.
