For those of us that have gone through S.E.R.E. school it's a mixed bag. At times I knew that I only had 3 days to go, but them getting beaten, sleep deprivation, and yes water boarding wiped that idea out of my head at the time. On the other hand sere was more of what to expect at a minimum and how to conduct yourself.

Let's just say we carried vasoline in our flight bags and didn't learn that from sere.
