NJ official heading Sandy recovery defends hiring firm, again blames feds for delays
The head of the New Jersey agency overseeing Hurricane Sandy housing recovery efforts today defended the hiring of a Louisiana firm that the state recently severed ties with following months of complaints, while repeating the assertion that federal red tape is slowing rebuilding.
New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Richard Constable said during wide-ranging testimony at a legislative hearing in Trenton that he couldnt provide details about why the state quietly ended its three-year, $68 million contract with Hammerman & Gainer, Inc., or HGI, because of legal concerns. He said the Attorneys General Office was in discussions with HGI's lawyers.
