Anyway, I think comfy socks are a great gift - we just bought some for my MIL (hope she doesn't read DU), and my wife was pretty stoked to get some for herself...

Personally I would love to get some good socks for Xmas, as all of mine have been darned repeatedly

For winter, I buy Costco wool blend socks. They are grey, warm, thick. I buy them in the store

Just make sure that the person is not senstive to wool if giving merino or smart wool or ingenious.
