(5,756 posts)About Sandusky at Penn State raping little boys for years and being protected by the university all the way up to the president of the university in order to protect the football program and the reputation of the University?
About how the high school players in Steubenville rather than seeking help for an intoxicated, incapacitated young girl whose life could have been in danger decided to rape her, urinate on her and drag her from party to party like a rag doll and then post the pictures on Facebook? And then to have the victim demonized and her family receive death threats because cause she reported the sexual assault. To have many, many citizens (not all of them) of Steubenville circle the wagons around the football team in their defense because that high school football team is such a sense of pride and identity for those people they choose not to believe the assault actually happened.
About the Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy that many current and former football players are suffering from? Including NFL players. CTE is a degenerative brain malady caused by repeated head injuries. Degenerative - as in the brain progressively deteriorates over time and there is no known treatment to stop CTE.
About how the NFL doesn't seem to give a crap about the players. And how what they really like about the fans is their ability to make $6 billion a year from the fans through television contracts, licensed merchandise, selling advertisements, and ticket sales.
These are the things the "football culture" as I refer to it in my OP has wrought for our country. All in the name of the good clean fun of watching people violently clash with one another play after play. A sport that isn't played outside the US.
Here is some other reading for your consideration.

The ritual of the games and the worship of the players as such heroes has exceeded all common sense. And, frankly, it's no laughing matter.
