CHELMSFORD -- State Police officials said a tractor-trailer hauling crates of eggs veered off the northbound lanes of Interstate 495 near a highway rest area and into the woods early Wednesday morning, creating havoc for commuters.
The 5:15 a.m. accident involved another tractor-trailer, which wound up in the median, and forced police to close one of the highway's three lanes.
Police said the 18-wheeler that wound up in the woods traveled roughly 50 yards and suffered a ruptured fuel line, resulting in a gas spill.
By approximately 6:52 a.m. all three lanes had reopened but police said they planned on waiting until the morning rush hour was over to move the truck from the grassy median.
